Ok. That’s where I thought you were going. Abandoned the mechanical regulator in the fuel gauge all together. Sourced a 12VDC to 5VDC solid state regulator and wired that in. Fits nicely to the back of the metal frame. Will post a picture of the configuration

Some of the problems with the OEM wiring. New harness going in. Then the dash goes back in.

Speedhut Gauges has done a nice job of mimicking the original gauges. These have a lifetime warranty, come with harnesses and sending units. GPS speedometer is an option.

What size are these gauges and how did they mount in? I really like them.
