Just tried it two days ago. Probably one of the quickest starts I've had, BUT, that was after priming the float bowls with a plastic olive oil bottle through the vents first (which I always do).
Yes it does. One side is full 12v (for starting), the other is I think about 9v (for running). Put the coil on the wrong side and you run full 12v all the time and probably reduce the coil life.
Forget left or right side. Turn it upside down and the right side becomes the left side.

I seem to recall, not long ago hearing on the news that there was to be a shortage of that stuff. I forget what there was/is a shortage of. Probably the peppers.
My understanding is that the Senate passed it, but the House hasn't yet taken it up. At very least we will change to CST next Sun. (11/6), and then back to DST next spring ............and hopefully stay there.
I'd go with the water softener. It does help protect the plumbing and fixtures.
Several years back, I replaced my old Culligan unit with the mechanical clock. It was regenerating every 3rd day and using about the same amount of salt as you where (maybe more). The replacement was a Fleck 5600SXT...
