Care to share any pics? That sounds like a very nice setup

Please help me pick the right tire size for my 78 Magnum XE

Back when I was a tire store manager, we had a common tire package for the A-body (colonnade body) GM models of 255/60/15 on the factory 15x7 wheel, which was the minimum width wheel that the tire could (officially) handle and kept the heigth closer to the 27.5" that the factory came with. Many...

Headers for 76 Cordoba 400 BB

+1 for TTI's. You want the best fit and while they're $$, they're you're go-to headers anymore. For a mild-moderate build, 1 3/4" should easily be enough and give you the most clearance around the starter and spark plugs too. Let us know what you decide.

    727 year interchanges

This is true- all of the HD/Police 727's weren't lockup in '78 either. *Most* others were, but one has to check and verify.

    440 vs 413

Scrape the grease off the engine ID pad (the flat horizontal machined spot on the top of the block right behind that water pump). Might take some wirebrushing too, but you'll see either "440" or "413" and some other letters/symbols stamped there. I'm 90% certain it's a 413, which is still a...

    CNC BB IRON HEADS

I've seen this company pop up in other threads on this topic in a few searches as I'm considering going this route with my 452 heads on my upcoming build. Would be nice to hear from others who may have used their CNC porting on iron heads and what their experience was (flow numbers are great...

    9 1/4 Ratios

If you're looking for numerically lower numbers, the 9.25" diffs in the 70's C-body cop cars and '75-'78 Big block B-body cop cars had 2.71s and 3.21 as options, although a limited slip was only available in the 3.21s. Then again, good luck finding a those cop car parts as they are quickly...

Graffiti in the lifter Valley ?

Nice score! All Heavy Duty (H.D.) 440 engines had the double roller timing chain, flash chromed valves, moly compression rings, amongst a number of other upgrades. The rod looks to be copper, which was a standard LY rod that was a bit out of spec after factory machining so they were copper...

FOR SALE Bolt in ready 440

I see a new timing chain on it, however it looks from the pics and the carbon ridge shadow it looks like factory pistons- has it been bored or re-rung? new bearing or the crank turned? Is the valvetrain factory or does it have roller rockers as the tall valve covers would suggest? Have the...

    Exhaust size vs hp

Additionally, the further downstream in the exhaust system you neck the pipes down in diameter, the less impact it will have on performance due to exhaust gases cooling and pressure correspondingly dropping.

    New to building motors

Yes, providing the block passed the magnaflux testing for cracks and the bores are true and haven't been excessively overbored, it's a great foundation for a build. Note that you will need to ensure you have the later model crank/bearings for the revised thrust bearing design in later 440...

How many engines have you exploded or hurt really bad????

Never blew one up myself (not any tranny's or diffs), however as a crew member on a number of Demo derby cars in the early 90's I was astounded to see how much absolute wonton abuse those stock engines could take. Sloppy and worn out 318's, 383's, 403 olds, 400 pontiacs, 440's, 305's, 350's...

440 engine rear down. Anything worth keeping?

That's a forged steel crank all day long. The "69" is a stamping, not a casting mark. Plus, the wide parting line is a giveaway.

440 Source vs Hughes stroker kit

Between those heads, go with 240's as the 270's are "Max Wedge" size and the 6 pack intake will not match the 270's ports. Good luck on build and don't overcam it.

    440 vs 413

Sounds awesome, however how much $$work$$ went into those 906's as compared to TF 240's to get them ready to bolt on?
