1962 Gas Tank Removal

Bought one at Chrysler Carlisle last July along with the 3/8" sending unit. Ordered the tank insulation pad and stainless steel ground clip from Classic Industries

Kid, Have you heard anything good bad or indifferent about Quanta , re the sending unit. I am placing an order this week, and that's one of the items on my list. Any input? Greatly appreciated! I was initially going to go with Joe Suchy. Thunder

I haven't heard anything on the Quanta, good or bad. I bought the unit at Chrysler Carlisle but either Spectra sold it to me with the tank or the Finelines vender sold it to me. I don't remember. The phone number is on the box in my picture if you want to call them. They're from Maryland.

They are made by Spectra. You can see the SPI logo on the instruction manual plus I looked it up. Here's what you get.

Did you find any extra cuss words?
Lol, no didn't need any. Easy job when you figure it out.
First thing you need to do after unbolting the strap, is to hold up on the tank and swing the bolt end toward the drivers side. Then the strap drops out of the slot. The strap being there, won't let the tank come down any farther than halfway.

In the past few years I've purchased 3 Spectra tanks and 3 Quanta sending units. In my opinion the tanks are a quality product, two of the sending units work fine, the third I haven't installed yet. The nipples are shorter than stock, so there isn't much room for the ground straps. The lock rings are pretty flimsy, so you're better off if you can use your original one or an NOS ring.

Thanks Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, Second and First, lol

Thanks for the heads up on the nipple lenth.

Did you do any calibration on the two sending units, or did you just "plug and play"?

Kid, let us all know how the sending unit experience goes. I am very interested to know what you think. Thunder

Will do. It might be awhile, I'm installing the tank so I can get this engine fired up. The electrical will come later on.

Waiting on my insulation pad. Just found out it was delivered to Minnesota!

Rodger That! Good Luck !!

Hey KK. I replaced my tank last year and had similar problems. I was unable to remove the filler neck before dropping the tank too as it was gooped into place by tank sealer :-(

I got the same tank as you through Jeff at 521restorations. Nice piece (the tank that is, not Jeff...)

I had my original strap, hook bolt, nut and filler neck and cap cadmium plated too - all looks new!

I just put them in with a new tank. They are about the same as described earlier, drive a few miles before the needle moves, more than likely has a few gallons when gauge says empty. I've never driven it until the gauge gets to E. I've seen a lot worse.

I never gave it a thought, you brought it up!

How is yours running? I believe you were having fuel problems last I heard...

Running good now.
My problem was vapor lock and not just on really hot days. A Carter elec fuel pump, 1/4" return line and this fuel filter solved that! -

Cut it open and wire brush it. I did it once in 1978 until I found another.

We did a lot of desperate things back in the day. But with the reproductions it makes life a little easier.
I had to dig out all of the undercoating to save the old ring. It's in good shape and definitely heavier than the aftermarket one.

I gave that filler tube about a quarter of a twist and it came right out. It wasn't about to let go while it was in the car. (You can see the original O-ring). Tube is a little crusty. I'm soaking it, might hit it in the blast cabinet or buy a new one.

Saw a pack of 5 lock rings NOS on ebay a month ago, I should have bought them $50.
