1964 4 spd speedometer gears

My 64 Dodge came from the factory with a 426 Street Wedge, A833 4 speed, 3.91 sure grip and a 19Tooth speedometer gear installed.
Do I still need this .75 ratio reducer?

I didn't see any adapters, just later pieces.

If you find one make sure it is the right ratio. There are some listed on Ebay and I think the ones Mopar used were
made by Stewart Warner.

according to a factory service manual a 3.91 gear and 7.75x14 tire needs a 19 tooth pinion with a .80 ratio reducer. from my experience a 20 or 21 tooth pinion with the .80 reducer would be more accurate. the ratio reducer, which is needed with the 3.91's, also needs a different speedo cable. i've used a '66 cable with the reducer.

the ratio reducer i have and used doesn't look exactly as the one in a previous post.

The reducer is the issue. The early trannys came with a limited range of speedo gears. Most teeth is a 21. Regardless of what the factory said I took mine 3.23 / 27" tire with its original 19 tooth gear out and checked it against GPS for speed and distance. Turns out that distance is correct with a 20 and speed is correct with a 21. I put in a 21. With a 4:10 and 28" tire you'd need a 25-26 tooth gear, which doesn't exist. A .8:1 reducer would do it too (with 21 tooth gear). Trouble is, the reducers that are common are made for the regular speedo attachment. No idea where to find one of the special ones for an early 727.

I see that I am in the bold lettered area, so I would need an adapter. I've been into the early 1962-1966 Plymouth and Dodge vehicles for too many years and I have never had or seen an adapter. Even with the Max Wedge Plymouths that I've had including the two that I have now, not one had or have it. Nor on my 1964 Dodge 440 426 Street Wedge.

i've been up-down and sideways with this thru the years. once you get past a 3.55 gear you have to have the ratio reducer, period!

according to the service manual i have all 426 street wedges came with 3.23's from the factory. are you sure you have a 3.91? the only early b-body cars that i know of that came with 3.91's were the super stock wedges.
 
The adapter on eBay (post 21) will not work for the 62-65 cars. It needs to be like the one in post 27.
 
lewtot184---Let me back up a bit...

When I got the car it had a dana 60 in it. I took that out and put it under my 63 Plymouth Savoy stage II 426 Max Wedge (June 24,1963 production date).

Having two 8 3/4 complete rear axle assemblies (1966-68), one 11 x 2 1/2 brakes with carrier 741 and 3.91 sure grip and the other 10 x 2 1/2 brake with carrier 742 and 4.56 sure grip, I installed the one with the 3.91 gears and 11" brakes, the front being 11 x 3", along with the Hemi suspension leaf springs-2539965 & 2539795 into the mix.

However sometime ago someone told me that you could special order the 3.91s as an option.

In your photo, what is the model number .777 or .800? (Model numbers that I seen so far for sale-for early Mopar?) Not at all sure.

the ratio reducer in the photo is a .90. i got it along with a cable from imperial services years ago. it's my understanding they could have been made with several gear reduction choices; probably 5% increments like the speedo pinions. to the best of my knowledge this is the only type of reducer that will work with the early speedo configuration. it's obvious that an early speedo cable will not work with this reducer. i'm fairly certain a '66 cable came with it. a .90 with a 21 tooth pinion should work with a 3.91 gear.

Yes, that is the style and you also need to change the speedometer cable to a 66. In 66 and maybe 67 Mopar used the screw on ends on both ends of the cable. I got a complete assembly for a 66 Belvedere from Rock Auto for less than $20 if I remember correctly.
 
Looking at the photo of the proper reducer I’m betting that with an old speedo cable, a common reducer and some basic machine shop skills these could be combined into an equivalent surrogate. I might even have a speedo cable end kicking around. I’ll take a closer look this afternoon.
 
The '62-'65 TF ratio adapters had three different ratios:

2291140= .8001
2291141= .9058
2291278= 1.0714

There was another, 2291133, used with standard transmissions. Don't know that ratio.

These were made by Stewart-Warner Model #777-AA. On originals, the ratio number is stamped in the housing.
