I a 1964 Dodge with factory power steering. What is the proper fluid level (bottom of filler neck)? Also what type of fluid would you guys suggest. Manual says automatic transmission fluid type A.

When I got my pump rebuilt, I think the level was in the instructions that came with the pump. I don't remember what it was. But you absolutely must not put AT fluid in the power steering pump. You must use power steering fluid.

Why do you say that? I have used Dexron ATF auto trans oil in all my PS pumps for many years. No problems. But not newer vehicles.........................MO

The correct level is at the bottom of the fill neck! I've always used type F and have never had any problems!

I may have to correct myself. I went to the Cardone site and they said PS fluid is not always the correct the fluid to use. Use the fluid the manufacturer recommends. Many applications do specify ATF so if your instructions say that, go for it. Dextron ATF was mentioned for many vehicles.

However, for pre-1998 Mopars, Cardone recommends power steering fluid.

Type F.....Walmart actually carry it and has the least expensive price.

If you use type A,the fluid will be black within a year, use power steering fluid, thats why it's called power steering fluid !!
