Hello all i am new to the forum and I have recently purchased a 66 belvedere 2 with no motor or tranny. The guy I bought it from said it previously had a 440 in it. I have located a 440 engine and tranny in a motorhome.I was wandering if this is a good match.I am not sure if there is any differences in motorhome engine and trannys than standard ones. Thanks for the help in advance,
Barry

IMOP,If your gunna just do a simple engine swap and your getting that stuff REALLY CHEAP,than it might be worth it.If you plan on some performance upgrades, that would not be the best choice. The heads supposedly are slightly different, the water pump and the converter is no good for a street car:edgy:

440's didn't come with the high mount water pump setup and yes, the heads are a bit different but they will still perform well. The major differences is mostly better cooling around the spark plugs. The later motor homes will not have the E brake drum on the tail shaft but will have a bolt on yoke instead of a slip yoke and the tail shaft will be short. The internals should have the larger drums with the extra clutch plates and 4 gear planetary setup.....

I'm pretty sure some of the 440 motorhome motors had the water pump housings that attached to the block AND the heads

Yeah, there's that industrial 413 (or 440 I guess) with the strange heads. If it looks, smells and tastes like a pass car 440 then you're good. The late model stuff is really low compression so be careful if you're going to cam it up. Focus on the cams designed for low CR and be happy.

I've never seen a 440 with the high mount pump....and a buddy that's been in the business tells me the same...not that he's 100% right but he knows his stuff. I've looked at and worked on many motor homes over the years and only the ones with the 413 have had that setup and the first time seeing one made me think, wow, that's from outer space  I've seen a lot of things that were not supposed to be on cars and I would guess motor homes wouldn't be any different. Best thing to do would be to check the numbers on the block and make sure what the engine is....

Thanks everyone! Im gonna make the plunge and get the 440.My friend said he could change out the tailshaft of the tranny for me with one from a pass car tranny. It only has 32,000 miles on it. I figure swap pistons and cam and different intake and carb and I should be good to go. Thanks again, Gooch
