1966 Charger - cranks but won't fire.

Yes negative on the coil goes to the points in the distributor.
 
Your kickdown linkage isn't right. Fix it before you drive your car. Get that bolt out of there a spring should pull it forward.
Edit: go to mymopar and download a service manual and go to trans section it explains how it is adjusted. Any SM from 1966 and newer will do for that.
 
With the choke off (open) this can be done manually have someone press the accelerator in the car to the floor.
See if the throttle plates open entirely (vertical ).
Make sure the cable and linkage do not bind and stick the throttle open.
That would be bad.
 
1) Its not idling at full throttle.

2) There really is not anything right with your linkage - is this the way it was before?

3) For a trial, remove the kickdown linkage, keep the return spring, look down the carb to make sure the throttle plates are closed, start the motor.

Why is the coil bracket upside down?
