Hey everyone,
Need some assistance, I brought my 66 to the local NC DMV Theft and Fraud location to have the car inspected. This is a requirement for any car 25 yrs or older brought into the state to make sure that the V.I.N. matches the car to the the title I received. After a thorough inspection of the car, the local DMV will not give me a new title since the door tag is too shiny and they claim that it looks replaced. They went on to search for any stamped numbers and found one on the radiator support but this matches the fender data tag # but not the V.I.N. #

Does anyone know where there are additional numbers stamped on the cars body that will match what was on the radiator support and the fender tag, after reading some links from Google, it appears that the V.I.N. will not be stamped anywhere other than the door area and that the others numbers will match the fender tag. I have read it could be behind the rear bumper and that it could be in the trunk channel. I need some help before I have to go a bonded title route which will surely be a royal pain in the butt.

Thanks Bill

sounds like you got an a hole at the dmv.my door plackard is shinny as hell and i had no prob at all getting them to register my ride.do you have a title from another state that matches that vin,or was this a non title sale deal.

The title I received from the previous owner (who had it registered in Fla) matches the door plate. But this is the NCDMV and I am at there mercy right now unfortunately.

there are several DMV offices in my area...if the same with you...take it to another office

Mines just the same as 67coronets...'shiny as hell'. That's how they ALL were in `66. It's a polished, stamped, stainless steel plate!...that resides in a door jam out of the sunlight and dirt! Their 'opinion' that it is 'too shiny' is just that...an O-P-I-N-I-O-N. They need to call in another person...Someone who ACTUALLY KNOWS the peculiars of old cars. If it's not feasable to go to another DMV location, I would ask to speak to that individual's supervisor. If they still refuse to title it, then suggest they call the local law enforcement and report the car as having in invalid VIN tag. Stir that pot enough and you will get your title. Do NOT(!) let them win!!!

Pre-68 body stampings are the SO number and not the VIN.

Perhaps you could submit documentation from multiple sources (or an agreed upon authority) to that effect. Perhaps you could also submit photo evidence of other door jamb VIN plates.

When I bought my 66, I gave the guy a downpayment and when I checked the VIN that he put on the receipt, I noticed that it was out of sequence, the RP23 was at the end. I told him it should be at the beginning and he then told me that it had a replacement VIN and that the numbers came off the data tag. He had registered the car numerous times with this VIN (only 12 digits) and he went with me to DMV to make sure nothing went wrong when I registered it. Those numbers do match the numbers on the radiator support though. I didn't know they were different than the ones on the door tag (which is missing). I have kicked myself in the *** many times for not noticing that that tag was not there! Someday I will find a tag and title that I will use for "display" to correct that issue.

Thanks for all the help guys. At this point I will be going the surety bond route. I'm getting too old to try to fight "city hall" and from what I have read it's not all that bad to get the car titled that way. It sure does stink but I will be keeping the V.I.N. plate once they assign a new V.I.N. to the car. That way I can preserve the car's origin and still make the State of NC happy with the yearly property tax they will collect and I get to drive the car and restore it along the way.
