I am having a disagreement with a friend. He says the Hemi did not go to 6qts. of oil with a filter until 1970. I told him all street Hemis from 1966 on were 6 qts. with the filter not 5.
My 68 still has it's 5 quarter original Hemi pan.
My 68 still has it's 5 quarter original Hemi pan.
Do you know if the pan stamped number is an indication of what it originally came on? Mine does have the indent for the idler arm that you mentioned. Can we get a picture of the pan from under the car? The C body pan, which is what I believe you have, has an indent on the pass side near the idler arm. This was in fact necessary to clear the idler arm on C bodies.
The pan capacity is measured with out the filter. The standard PH-8A filter holds right at a quart I believe. So a 4 quart pan (standard on most non HP passenger cars and many muscle cars) would need 5 quarts if you are changing the filter, 4 quarts if not changing it.So that is 5 qt. total with or without a filter change?
I can take pics tomorrow, I have read that 68-69 are Hemi specific and mine are supposed to be one of them, saw one mint at ebay for sale "buy it now $1395" in Florida, told a friend about that ridiculous price and the next day it was sold???

From what I know the 66 hemi pan does not have a stamp but not sure about 67-69 or later.
Far as oil pan capacity goes, I measured one from a 1973 400 engine, off the car and it took 6 quarts (water) to bottom of windage tray. I was surprised. I have it on my 451 now. And it takes 6 quarts to get it to the full mark on dipstick. It is noticably larger than the early 440 magnum pan. Has 699 stamped on the bottom.
