I am having a disagreement with a friend. He says the Hemi did not go to 6qts. of oil with a filter until 1970. I told him all street Hemis from 1966 on were 6 qts. with the filter not 5.

Simple. Fill it up till it reads "FULL" and note how much it takes. But you knew that already. I am pretty sure you are correct, btw.

The 66 cars used a C body pan and I believe this went through 69. The only difference that I know of is when this pan was installed on the hemi it got baffles. That being said it's very possible this early pan was a 4 qt sump.

My 68 still has it's 5 quarter original Hemi pan.

Thats just the pan 5 quarter, but I have a 1970-71 6 quarter pan complete with pick-up so I will replace it this winter.

Far as oil pan capacity goes, I measured one from a 1973 400 engine, off the car and it took 6 quarts (water) to bottom of windage tray. I was surprised. I have it on my 451 now. And it takes 6 quarts to get it to the full mark on dipstick. It is noticably larger than the early 440 magnum pan. Has 699 stamped on the bottom.

Can we get a picture of the pan from under the car? The C body pan, which is what I believe you have, has an indent on the pass side near the idler arm. This was in fact necessary to clear the idler arm on C bodies.

I can take pics tomorrow, I have read that 68-69 are Hemi specific and mine are supposed to be one of them, saw one mint at ebay for sale "buy it now $1395" in Florida, told a friend about that ridiculous price and the next day it was sold???

Do you know if the pan stamped number is an indication of what it originally came on? Mine does have the indent for the idler arm that you mentioned.

So that is 5 qt. total with or without a filter change?
The pan capacity is measured with out the filter. The standard PH-8A filter holds right at a quart I believe. So a 4 quart pan (standard on most non HP passenger cars and many muscle cars) would need 5 quarts if you are changing the filter, 4 quarts if not changing it.

Cool, thanks.

I have seen the $1000.00+ hemi pans and couldn't believe it. I have a 66 hemi car and when looking in an original 66 parts book I noticed the part number for the hemi pan and the 361 pan were exactly the same. So there must be three pan styles in the 6 yr street hemi production?

From what I know the 66 hemi pan does not have a stamp but not sure about 67-69 or later.

The guy I bought the motor from bought it in 1977, it was out of a 1968 red Charger 4 speed in NJ, that had a fire in the dash so they just junked it, hole driveline was put into a 1970 Challenger JH23 and thats how my seller bought the hole package, and when I asked him about this oilpan he guaranteed that it was the original pan, if anybody know where the Chargers remains is let me know I do have the title for it, thats my nick at dodgecharger.com 68RED4SPEED

Gary, that's a C body pan. The 699 and the 187 are duplicates of each other, other than their stamped number. They are both kinda coveted in the A body world, because they have an indention that works with the A body idler arm. I have a 187 pan myself. Nice to know it also holds 6 quarts.

Also, here is a nice page on 440source.com with pans, numbers and applications.

Wow those pictures are cool! Never seen a hemi oil pan, that thing is HUGE!

The reason there is a factory welded plate on 66 and 67 Hemi K frames is because the pan is deeper and it is to protect it. I am going with six qts. with a new filter and will let you know.
