1968 charger rt info

Hello my name is chris i bought a 1968 charger rt a few years ago and in the process of restoreing need a question answered if anyone can help iwas told the vin and the fender tag and the core support #all matched but then year one say not till 1969 chargers can anyone verify this info please because the core support and the fender tag match but not with the vin on dash on this one help???
 
Welcome. 68s had the order number on the core support and not the VIN. The order number is on the fender tag as is the VIN. So the VIN on the fender tag should match the dash, and the order number should match the core support
 
So sue me. It's been a while since I've had a 68 tag to fawn over
 
This the interesting thing about 68 back Mopars, the only place you can tie the V.I.N. and the S.O. numbers is on the B/S, the IBM card, the original invoice or window sticker.

On later build '68's the engine was stamped with a partial vin (an example for a Hamtramck build is "8B123456", with the corresponding vin being, say, XP29H8B123456) at the oil pressure sensor, and with the transmission's (auto and Manual) case also stamped with the partial vin. So, if a car had the matching numbers vin with the motor and transmission , and a fender tag S.O. that matched the radiator support and trunk lip S.O. numbers, the vin and S.O. would be married.

Actually, the V.I.N. on engines and trans for the 68 model year was hit and miss throught the entire year with no rhyme or reason. It was far more predictable that it would be there on Hemi cars than any others for some reason.

Yes, The V.I.N. and S.O. numbers ARE married on the cars in the locations you mentioned (the hidden numbers) but the point of those was for I.D. purposes for law enforcement in recovering stolen cars that had V.I.N. plates switched and that is when it is important to be able to cross check the two. The only way to do that was back at the original selling dealer if known from original ordered paperwork, or at the manufacturer where it was on file with the IBM card. The point is that today with the potential for rebodied cars, the things listed previously in this post are what you need to confirm that the V.I.N. and the S.O. ARE truley married as it left the factory.
 
Rebodied cars are always a possibility for the '68's. But if the build sheet and the dealer paperwork are missing, and then throw in a fire in the records room, you then need to look very carefully at the car and the particular details therein to prove to yourself that it is original.

696pack, to what do you attribute your statement that it was hit and miss on the vin stampings for '68? I'm curious and would really like to know. Thanks. :beerchug:

I have been around these cars for 40 years, in fact I sold Dodges NEW from 1968-1974. I have owned many, many old Mopars including a 1968 Charger R/T Hemi car. Not just my observations but also feedback from others in the hobby that have noted the same from original examples of 68 model cars throughout the build year. It has been discussed several times on Moparts as well and again several have comment the same that I have stated.

What most people don't know is that it was NOT mandated by the Federal government but rather a request from the insurance companies to help them regarding thieft recovery. Some makes started it early on their own accord, as an example, Chevrolet began putting the V.I.N. on the engine block in 1960.
