1968 Road Runner real or fake?

I just picked up a 1968 Road Runner last Friday. The problem is that the car has chrome wheel well moldings and rocker moldings. The vin number is rm21h8g122***. The vin decoder says 1968 Road Runner with 383. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks, Tim
 
If the VIN checks out, it's probably a Road Runner. Is it a hard top or a coupe? Early build Runners came as a coupe only and hard tops came later in the year but don't remember exactly when.
 
It has the post in front of the rear windows that POP out. It also has a 1968 440 with the letters HP-2 on the pad on the front of the motor.
 
It's a Road Runner but they had no option for 440 in 68. I think it was available in post and hdtp from the start.

Thanks, It's probably not the correct motor. I'm going by the pad on the front of the motor. I haven't looked at the side or the vin number on the back.
 
Check the fender tag and/or build sheet. I had a late build '68 RoadRunner that had the Decor group, light group, and all the moulding you mentioned as well. It was basically optioned like a GTX. Late in 68 more options were available.

Hi Tim. Don't worry, it's real. I'll send a PM with some questions. Here's what I know.

*The moldings came from a GTX, common add-on over the past 40 years, but not available out of the factory for RR. It just means that a previous owner customized the car to his liking.

*No 440 available in 68 for RR, again a very common change over the years. Only 383 and Hemi available, someone swapped in the 440.

*Hardtops available on day one in the B-bodies except for the RR; for RR it was coupes until March 68. It was a cost savings move by Plymouth to keep cost down (the RR was designed to be the value package, hardtops are more costly to build. Public demand called for the intro of the hardtop for the RR; back in the day the post was seen as not as stylish, not a "clean" look).

*Your RR was built middle of September 67 in St. Louis.

there were posts and coupes in 68.( rm21/RM23).roadrunners then were very basic and the wheel moulding/rocker was added by someone else...looks cool though....440/4 barrel was not an option in 68 or 69. (also in 68..bench seat/column shift only unless manual on the floor.) If the vin tag starts RM21 or 23 then it most likely is a "Runner"....good luck

Never say never... As said above, I recently sold a late built 68 (july 12 1968) which had body sill mouldings, drip rail mouldings, body bely mouldings, high trim grade, a/c, etc. I still have the paperwork from the fender tag and build sheet decode from Galen. I do agree the 440 wasn't available.
I would check the fender tag, core support and trunk gutter to see if the SO number is the same in all 3 places.

Post car...coupe...depends on who you ask. Same car. I had a sales brochure and it called them a coupe. Wiki calls them a 2-door pillared coupe. That's a new one on me. Anyways, a hardtop was not available at first. Also, the early cars if not all 68 RR's had the Belvedere name plate on them too.
 
Can anyone tell me what the options are by looking at the finder tag?

AX/68 = 8.75 rear end with 3.23 gears and Sure Grip.
D4L = interior code = Deluxe Interior, 4 = vinyl bench seat L = parchment and Tan
LL1 = exterior paint = L = medium dark turquoise paint; 1 = car is painted all one color
U/Y = inner upper door frame painted to match interior

A/1 = 26" radiator
C/4 = HD suspension with sway bar
R/1 = 421 = AM radio
h/7 = 517 = hood mounted turn signal indicators
k/7 = outside right hand manual mirror.

The sill molding is the bright piece below the door. The belt molding is the bright piece on top of the door.

So, I guess my car is rare?

Sorry, there's nothing particularly rare or special about this one.
 
I have been told that the LL1 was only available for a few months on the Road Runner in `68, same color mine was originally and will be again. That an ac car with the 26" rad?, windows look tinted. Can you post more pics of underhood and interior?
