1969 Charger R/T - Have the shell, now the fun starts....

Alright .. motor is installed. Currently working on the wiring. I am digging these wire looms, they really clean up the engine bay. I think these are the same that Mr. SpeedFreak used. Great product. Making progress slowly but surely. I am waiting on some small parts to finish putting the power steering pump on and a nut for the air shocks in the back… the hardware that came with the air shocks came with an unthreaded nut… unbelievable. So we wait for summit to send me another nut. Getting close to installing the radiator and one step closer to starting her up. Those direct connection valve covers are just mock ups that we are going to use for breaking in the motor and the springs. I have stock ones that I am going to put on.

What kind of air cleaner are you going with? Wondering what kind of hood clearance you have.

Correction . . .

Hey Speedy and H2E . . . Guess I've got to show the new guy what a shell in T5 looks like . . . ( grin )

Boy have you got a great looking "shell" of a car that you're starting with ! ! !

My, I like that T5. And the green grass in your picture looks pretty fine also.

I've seen so many shades of alleged T5. It almost seems like the color "copper metallic" is open to interpretation.

Looking good! Yeah those looms look like the same ones I used, I really like them too. That sucks about the unthreaded nut lol at least it was through Summit so you kow you'll be taken care of. And I actually really like those Direct Connection covers! I'd love to have em when you switch back to the stock ones haha :icon_thumleft:

H2E I am running a stock dual snorkel. Funny you mention that I was just thinking (worrying) about that today. I think it will be okay though with the slight hood bulge and natural incline. Here's hoping!

And I've still got original T5 paint in a few places on my car if anyone wants to see it haha

Sweet Charger, sounds like it was located close to me, I know of a black one around here but don't believe I've ever seen that one, good luck with your project!!

Welcome to the Charger family. Very nice looking Charger (hardly call it a shell) it looks really solid and ready to go. Looks like your well on your way with getting it up and running again as well "nice motor". Good luck

Please post up if it fits - and be very careful letting the hood down the first time. Those RPM manifolds are a touch over an inch taller than a factory unit. I have the same setup and there is no way I can use the factory unsilenced air filter assembly. I don't have my hood on yet, but I am guessing I need something with at least a 1 1/4 drop base.

I tested the Edelbrock Torker with Carter and stock un-silenced air cleaner by putting a wet towel over the air cleaner and gently shutting the hood, checking, checking until I was sure it was going to clear then gently latching it. I then let it up to see if there was any damp transfer to the hood to see if it was close enough to rub. The towel was thicker than other stuff I had laying around like shop rages etc.

Sure there's better ways to see if it's close enough to touch before closing or rub while running and driving though

Engine looks good, maybe you could do up a video when you get it running! I do like that color conv67! Im really liking the area around the garage there, green not white! :)

So I bought a new starter for the rebuild. Installed it prior to installing the transmission due to lack of access to the starter once the tranny is in when you're running full headers. Once the starter was installed we hooked up the tranny. As we were testing wires in the engine bay we hooked up the starter just to bump it and it decided it was only going to work intermittently…:angryfire: ….. so out came the tranny and I pulled the starter back out. Got the new one, BENCH TESTED IT, then put it back in and bolted the tranny back up. I know better and I should have bench tested the first one. Anyway… we got the radiator installed (the Champion fit beautifully) and hooked up the tranny lines. All we need now is some odds and ends, some fluid, and it will be time to let her rip!!!

I took H2E's advice and ordered the TTI 2 1/2" inch exhaust with the Dynomax mufflers. I also went through Chicago Connection at the advice of H2E and got free shipping. All told the header back exhaust system with all installation material including mufflers was $595.00 shipped. Hard to beat that price and I've heard nothing but good things about TTI's systems. I will be sure to post a video when we fire her up.

Looking good! If you run a bigger tape measure across from fender to fender and over the carb, that will give you a good idea of what kind of clearance you have. There's a lot of threads at Moparts and Dodge Charger.com about running a RPM manifold on a RB block in a Gen II Charger. Drop base seems to be the ticket. Seen some guys modify the factory style air cleaner by grafting out of a ford mustang drop base and attaching to the Mopar air cleaner. Good luck.

H2E .... as I feared, the air cleaner does not clear the hood with that RPM High Rise manifold. I really want to use the stock dual snorkel air cleaner so I ordered a low rise manifold and I will be replacing it. It will be annoying to remove the work I've already done but I won't be happy with an aftermarket air cleaner and if I'm going to put all this money and time in I don't want to settle. Sooo... we wait for the new intake.. I got the exhaust from TTI in today though! Gunna start cracking on that tomorrow. In the mean time I got the rear seat upholstered and now I am working on the fronts. Will be posting pictures soon.

I thought you might have some clearance issues as I have the same problem. I decided to keep the RPM intake and go with some sort of drop base air cleaner. If I was to do it over, I would have used a Holley intake.

Tallhair.... did it clear??? Haha, the suspense...

I guess I'm a little late to respond since I see your setup didn't but it appeared to since I saw no evidence of transfer and looked like it would by line of sight across the fenders with the hood open. But it was a mock up (eddy carb) but since then I've pulled the engine for clean up. We'll see when it goes back in .. btw the 6 BBL was shorter than the Torker due to the dual plenum and factory design requirements. I'd think my Torker intake would be as tall or taller than your RPM but I've never had one of those. The R/T hood does have a bulge though so maybe that helped.
