318 engine 30 over RV cam,do I send it out and have it rebuilt or buy a 6 pack center carb? Having the original carb rebuilt/looking new might get up to $500 Im thinking. Could I use the original air cleaner on the holly carb. Keeping it as a 2 barrel. Your thoughts on this please.

Six pack carbs have a D carb throat opening at the top verses a O for the standard 2 brl carb so the air cleaner might be wobbly...

Rebuild the original. With your money, $500.00 Is just a drop in the hat. We all know you have to have a lot of bank, you own a Charger. :poke:

Whether you have a BBD or a BBS, why send it out ?? Rebuild the carb you have yourself. It's very easy.

IMO....The original 318 carb is likely to be a 1-1/4" CARTER BBD, or depending on year, it could be a 1- 1/4" Stromberg WWC3. A center 6 barrel carb is a Holley of 355 CFM flow, but has a totally different mounting bolt pattern configuration....in short, they DO NOT INTERCHANGE physically. The Carter carb is simple and easy to rebuild. I like Standard Motor Products Zip or Jiffy kits.....the instructions show all the details and adjustments...also outlined in the Factory Service Manual for your specific car and engine. The FSM is also available on line at no cost.....I cannot recall the web site address........Others may know or offer suggestions.......

I would add to Bob's comments: always follow the carb kits' instructions in the order they are printed. Many carbs must have the adjustments in sequence, or it throws other adjustments out of wack.

Thank you all for the replies, will order a kit. It is a Carter BBD

Ordered my kit, this place had everything. Carter BBD Carburetor Rebuild Kit K7124
Please be sure that the kit you ordered is for a Carter 1-1/4" BBD for a 318 engine. Carter made 1-1/2" BBD for a 361 & 383 Engines. The difference is significant......mounting bolt configurations, air horn gasket, and general overall appearance, etc.....did not want you to be disappointed. But the carb is easy to rebuild...the instructions are very good....take your time....especially with the metering rods, step up piston setting....the rods are small and easy to bend when inserting them in the jets......and the pop up piston and spring moves freely up and down and does not hang up.......just a thought......

I would consider a 500 CFM holley.
Should get nice performance with it on there.
