1970 RR crazy protour

yes we will be documenting it all the way through. I asked my mechanic about the charger that was done similar. He said they took the top off a old charger and "skimmed" it on to the newer body. He asked me now what is it? A newer charger or older charger? He liked the idea of keeping as much of the older as as possible. This way it will still be a RR. I guess everyone has their own ideas about what is correct.

First stop is the frame shop to fix any bent body parts of the charger.

they did a New / old GTO on there also this is a great video as to what you will need to be doing . They built that car for tanner faust the drift car champion and no top gear usa host . I hate those new GTO's so they improved the looks of that think alot .

The charger they did on west coast customs for gary dourdan from CSI .
They kept the complete upper body and dropped it over the complete new chassis attaching it at the rocker areas . I'm pretty sure they had to shorten the new chassis to make it work as a two door .

Ok let me understand this.... They gave this guy a car with a rebel flag painted on the inside of the roof? humm kick in the nuts?

no he wanted it ( gary ) painted on the out side , they thought better of a black guy driving around with it so they put it inside :headbang::headbang::headbang:

i'm sure if you dig around more on utube or other places you can find the whole episode and see the charger build

the gto one was easy to find and showed the jist of what they cut off the charger and did the same body drop on it too .

please be patient with updates.... we are working on frame issues with the charger. The decision has been made to move the front and rear suspension over to the rr but the charger cradle is broken and the frame is bent. This will cause issues with the line up the jig so we are working on fixing the charger (replacing bad front mechanical's and getting car straight enough to start cutting.)

I have a site I am building for detailed info about the build I will post address when it is far enough along to be useful. I tracked down a challenger fuel cap and filler neck from a late model challenger in junk yard and had it cut out to weld into the roadrunner. Going to look cool. :)

Please don't rely on that silly West Coast Customs show for cogent tips on how to do this very tricky and difficult build! I was pondering this same build myself last year, and, put a thread up on it (its still here on this site, search it out) and got some stellar advice and know-how from people that actually have done it, along with some of their tips of the trade with out letting the entire car out of their methods to this build.

Sign me up optiview, I'm in for the ride!

Ok so I haven't vanished. Just not much to post since starting but now its moving fast. Ok so first we had to get the charger engine out. engine crash small.jpg Here is the engine thats running with frame damage on charger.

So first we fixed engine and replace all damaged items. Now car drives but still has frame damage. So we sent car to frame shop and got it all straight. This will allow us to move front end from the charger to roadrunner without alignment issues.charger engine pulled.jpg

Goodbye roadrunner engine and suspension!rr enging missing.jpg

now after many hours of deliberation, Craig suggested that we need to set the height of the road runner because the auto levelers in the charger would not allow easy adjustments after the conversion. So I borrowed some rims and tires from him with the size I liked, and we commenced to a fittin! Here is the road runner being setup for leveling.

Ok so now that we have the car the correct rake we like, The Road runner needs some prep work. Here it is in the Jig with parts from the charger being test fitted

rr front jig.jpg

After much debate we have decided that the entire firewall to the backseat should be replace with charger floor. This will allow all the parts from floor petals , steering wheel to the front seats and floor shifter to work seamlessly in the roadrunner but it will still be a road runner. Not a "skinned car"

Ok so now Craig (mechanic) has the brilliance to be able to envision this whole build. Although I have some minor input, most of the planing design and execution is done by him.

Humm ,,,, hardest part is choosing the paint. I wanted blue but most modern blues have pearl in them, this to me is a fad and to much like big wheeled DUB cars. So I am leaning tward the good old 1970 B5 blue.

Here are test shots of the B5 against the B7. B5 is the lighter one.

Ok so paint is selected... Lets shoot the floor before installing so it will be easier for final paint

floor painted 2.jpg

Now that is is painted and ready to go we need to remove road runner floor

ok now lets see if it will fit ....

Nice job Craig. Fits perfectly.! In the mean time we need to get gas into the car. The old licence plate filler just won't do. So we need to borrow ideas from the old charger and challenger and put the gas cap on back quarter.

Hows this location?

gas cap location.jpg

Oh a picture of the cap was easy, but how are we going to install one? I have an idea. Lets also borrow a real gas inlet from a challenger.

Found a wrecked challenger in N.Y. Although I asked just for the inlet they gave me the whole quarter. LOL.

what do you think so far guys? Hell of a ride so far. We intend on using almost everything from charger right down to the exhaust if possible.

I love the concept, going that extra step further to add all of the suspension is awesome in my opinion. A lot of pro-touring cars have gone with a motor/tranny swap and then dropped oodles of cash on aftermarket suspension that honestly is just enhancing an out dated design. With this its all being updated, even the design, not just specific pieces. I also love the fact that youre adding the 68-70 Charger fuel cap, i had that very same idea for a 70 Roadrunner i wanna do.

The only thing i would do different is keeping the old interior and maybe just swap the front seats out for some more modern ones. However i would use the ProCar Rallyes just to make sure they didnt stick out like a sore thumb and ruin the whole flow of the interior. Well, thats not the only thing id do different but specifics are just nit-picky lol.

Now heres a challenge i will issue to you right now as its something i really wanted to do. Make that air-grabber hood fully functional on that modern Hemi! Haha, and i dont just mean "it vents the engine bay" functional i mean literal ram-air induction system. Now that would be very badass.

Although i would keep most of the original interior, i do applaud you for taking that extra step. A LOT of people recently have lost touch with what pro-touring is and have been building track cars that they call pro-touring. Ive seen a lot of cars with no overdrive and a completely stripped interior being called pro touring just because they have 18-inch rims and are at a circle-track, which i think is complete BS. A pro-touring car, by definition, is an older car that is just as at home tearing up a track as it is comfortably cruising on a 1500 mile road trip (emphasis on comfortably). It also must do so very efficiently on modern mileage terms. However i believe once your car is done it will get better mileage simply because these Roadrunners are so much lighter than the new Chargers are. I'll be watching more of this for sure ;-)

I agree with many of the things you have mentioned. But the interior is going all charger. Even the dash. The reason is 2 fold. 1. is that by using the charger interior, time is saved by retrofitting all the parts that were designed to go together instead of trying to piece together old with new. The other reason is I have had several "old" cards and even restored they were not as fun to drive on a daily basis as newer cars. This car is destined to allow daily driving with all the comforts of a modern car. I can drive it to work during the week and to a car show on weekends. Best of both worlds. :)

As far as the hood scoop. I just don't like the hood scoops on that year. Don't get me wrong I had one on my 69 GTX and 71 challenger but don't like the examples Iv'e seen on the 70.

It was a Jamacian flag
West coast customs has done the 68 charger, 67 chevelle onto a newer corvette, the GTO, and a 58 corvette onto a newer covertte.
Definitely a high dollar and labor intensive conversion.

website not available..

The internet hates pro mods..(secretly I don't blame it..) ;)

Very cool, and I'm interested in this one! Post lots of pics of the grafting process!
