1972 400 CID info

So a Mopar friend texted me today, asking if I wanted a 400 from a 72 Dodge. UMMM Heck yeah I say, how much? Oh you can take it, Sweet.

He is a old time Mopar dude, says its been on a engine stand for 12 yrs, so I haven't seen it yet, but I assume if it was trashed it would have been disposed of long ago.

So he is bringing it by next week. It is basically a bored 383 right, what can be done to these motors, pretty much everything a 383 has to offer?
 
Yep, a big bore 383, and in fact it has a larger bore than a 440 (4.320" vs. 4.340"). What you do with a 400 block is make a 451 out of it buy putting in a 440 crank - after you cut the mains down and take .125" off the radius of the counterweights.

or a 470 (w/3.90 crank)..........or a 499 (w/4.15 crank).........or a 512 (w/4.25 crank).......lots of possibilities with the 400 block. :love4:
 
They run pretty good as a short stroke big bore engine too and work well in a light weight car using a short stroke....and a forged 383 crank drops right in with no mods....
 
There's also a relatively new 9-9.5:1 piston available for stock bore/stroke.
