It might be a forged crank. The damper will tell you. And the pad by the distributor. Thick damper=cast crank.

ok - how thick is thick and what will the pad say
worst case what would stock hp be ... best case stock

Also,
Didn't motor home BBs have the "smog heads" too?
I heard they have larger cooling ports.
Can anyone weigh in on this?

Don't think you are going to have a powerhouse here without extensive work. At best you might have a good block, crank' rods and all the tin and hardware. To make power you will need pistons, cam, heads, intake along with all the other rebuild items..

Pistons are down in the hole, about 8.0 compression, smog heads and cam with retarded timing. if you are lucky. More like 225 hp.

ok thx ; thats the answer i was looking for,it would be allot of work to gain a little more power on a high school budget

Motorhome engines classified as "truck", no smog til 79. Dad's 76 Winne 440 4bbl TQ had no smog crap like cars here in JEERZZEEE (ie: East California)

is there any real hP
Not really, but TORQUE, yes. Dad's 92 Allegro 454 32' has 265hp, but over 450 # Torque, gets that 12500lb (empty) thing rolling.

What's the big deal ? What it's "advertised" HP, etc. is meaningless ! You're gonna do a 30 over, so new pistons are in the mix. Heads ? Take you pick of aftermarket aluminum heads. Of course, a suitable cam based on your combo. And, the usual intake & exhaust improvements. You don't want that 440 block ? I'll take it off your hands now.

When I was in high school, my buddies and I pulled a motor home 440 out of the bone yard for a 71’ roadrunner. We added a cam, headers, intake, and carb. That dog would hunt and kill back tires all day long. Cheap and plenty fast. Doesn’t have to be great, just has to be.

I get the impression that this is your first engine ? Remember that this engine is 45 years old .
Does it run ? Mileage ? condition ? smoke ? leak ?
Its value lies in your interpretation of what you expect.
Any 440 guy here would love to have it. Good blocks are a rarity today.
What is it you are really looking for performance wise and what are you putting it in ?
How much money do you have to spend ?
Any engine experience ?

Mid 70s motor home 440s .
Most are low mileage and have had regular maintenance.
Many folks need to have large compression numbers , quench, after market heads ect.
I'm using a stock bottom 76 440 myself.
Compression is so bad I can buy gas anyplace I stop.
I did a cam and lifter swap, eddy intake , headers , 800 T quad carb and a good curve on the distributor.
For a weekend driver it runs really good.
Plenty of power for a cruiser.
