330000 superbird

At the “Art of the Automobile Auction” from RM Auctions and Sotheby’s this afternoon, a 1970 Plymouth Superbird – one of 58 built with a Hemi and a four-speed, with just over 16,000 original miles – sold for $330,000, falling $97,000 short of its LOW pre-auction estimate of $400,000 to $500,000.

Newton's Law; what goes up must come down.

This has been going on since 2009. I think the true "Jump The Shark" moment for muscle cars came at the BJ auction in 2009 when there was endless hoopla and glorification of Reggie Jackson's 1969 ZL-1 Camaro that was going to be the first million-dollar Camaro ever... then it didn't even reach $300k and sold for only $290,000. That was a huge eye opener for a lot of people, and while there have been a few peaks here and there since 2009, the trend in prices has definitely been going down.

I know this sucks for our fellow enthusiasts who bought at the top of the mark, but now that prices are coming down I'm not only seeing lower prices on restored cars but there are also lots of people dumping off project cars that they had been holding onto. A few years ago when I was looking for my project 73/74 Road Runner, I spent two years looking at parts piles that had once been cars, or project cars that were priced like full restos. Now there are four 73/74 Road Runners and Satellites within an hour's drive of me that I could pick up for close to $1,000, that have all come up for sale in recent months, and I am digging that.

PS: I remember seeing a white "Bird" w/blk vinyl top, 440 4BBL auto on column blue interior in Dayton Ohio for $2,500.
I did not buy it...1984
OUCH

Hey Super-bee_ski! I had clam cakes and Rhode Island chowder for dinner just the other night! Haven't been to the Willow's in a while. Used to hang out there a lot when I lived in Narragansett. If you're ever back in RI, drop me a line!

$330,000 still ain't cheap... unless you bought at a much higher inflated 2007 price
