360 4bbl Performance

3.55 would make a big difference- thanks for the info
Factory had us investigate why 400/440 Corcdbas were dogs- gears and a restrictive exhaust in addition to the compression

There is a long list of crap on and in the engine that could be changed!

Ahhhhh. The smog years.... a nightmare hp wise that should stay away.

They made 440 Cordobas?

sure did even magnum but all came with the magnum converter to help get the revs up and get moving with the tall gears
even with a 440 you could not accelerate with just throttle going up the ridge route
driving up a hill you would give them more throttle which just made more heat unless you shifted down

and did I say mileage sucked
We ran a test LA to SF and back in the summer
even with the AC on FUll that car was HOT
even with all the exhaust shields
we reported lack of airflow through engine compartment
big add on spoiler helped but looked funky= oem could have fixed that
but gas crunch and 440 discontinued
they ran alright once you got them reved up- but not like 20 years earlier I had an Imperial that ran better
Customer at the Dealership just had his painted and wife kept scraping it up going up their driveway
He traded it in on something smaller- I got it- like new for $300

I have never seen a 440 Cordoba.
Magnums were late to the game with the biggest being a 400/4.

another thread right now where he says is dad had a 440 corcoba

Only post 74 B body cars I've ever seen with a 440 are cop related.

Never say never on this topic, though for the most part.

I don’t see a reason why it couldn’t show up with a 440. I juswanna know of one that came stock with it. It’s possible up to a certain year of which I don’t know what that may have been.

I can only say a Magnum in ‘78 had the biggest engine of a 400. In ‘79, it was a 360 or a 318. That is it.

Lots of 360 knowledge up in here. Is anyone aware of Imperials coming with an LA360 engine? If so were their performance any different from your basic Plymouth Dodge LA360 lineups?

My 74 Charger SE came with a 318 but the last owner said he swapped the engine out for a 360 out of an Imperial from around the same year. I researched the engine block numbers and it looks like it was manufactured in the later months of 1974.

At about 280,000 miles and still running good btw.

Back to the 360 stuff. There were several different versions of all the initial "smog era" 360's IIRC. I built a 360 to replace the OEM 318 in my '76 van tow vehicle. 360's were dime a dozen in the early '80's. 30 over forged pistons, Comp High Energy 268 cam, LD4B & Carter aftermarket AFB, 1 5/8 headers. Fantastic power to pull my trailer & car. 3+ MPG better than the OEM 318 2 BBL ever did. I used the stock converter with that. Later one of the LA cast crank 727's I picked up had the "High Stall" sticker on it. Might have been fun in my van. But to the OP, seems like the difference between the different rating types.

360’s basically came in two flavors. 2 & 4 barrel carbs. The basic difference is the 4bbl. and cam found in E & B body performance cars. Exhaust manifolds differ for the car model.
After that, really nothing different.

What is nice is they respond to mods just like the earlier engine. The biggest challenge is getting the compression up. Back in the day.... the normal way was ether mill the head or use small chambered W2’s.

as said all the 2bbl and all the 4 bbl are basically the same even for Imperials
It's the cost of Smog certification with any major changes
Lill Red Truck did not get W2 heads because of the cost of smog tests- pity

Back in the 70s, I had a friend with a 74 or 75 Dart Sport with a 360 - 4 speed. It ran surprisingly well, and I really like the car.

If I were to select a fair weather daily driver muscle car, a 360 4 speed A-body would be on my short list.

I agree, being A little biased here. I’ll tell ya there fun. Even with the OD trans. A OD 5spd is bad ***.

That probably the reason the engineers were told not to do any testing on that route. But as we know, they did, got in trouble, project **** canned. It is certainly “A pity” that head never went to a production car run. Could have really killed the competition then!
