I traded for a 68 383 block for my 68 Charger. My plans are to have some fun and have it stroked. It has been rebuilt and the pistons are stamped .040. A friend told me the block is good, there is a nick or two (I did that getting the pistons out) at the top of a cylinder, and it might have to be bored again. Is there any problem, expecially cooling problems, going .060 over and stroked? Thanks in advance.

Why not just use the pistons you have, and re hone the cylinders with new rings? We did that with my sons 383 and it runs great! And we have .010" piston to wall clearance. A small nick or 2 at the top of a cyl isn't going to hurt anything. Also 383 blocks are pretty common. Could always find a std bore block and bore it to fit your pistons. Not sure about going .060 O.S. in a 383 block. I would say not to do that. It will work, but the more you bore it, the less metal you have in there, makes it not as strong.

Sounds like you can do what Gary recommends. Your power isn't going to come from the overbore anyway, so ne need to waste the block if you can save it.

If you're going to pay for it to be stroked, pay to have the block sonic checked and then you'll KNOW if you have cylinder walls that are thin.

Great replies everyone. The pistons that came out were cast flat tops and probably not good to reuse. I like the idea of staying with the .040 as opposed to going larger. I assumed itwould have to be bored. I'll try to set up the sonic check and all as soon as I can and that should answer the question. Again, thanks, if not for you folks, I wouldn't have a clue what I'm doing.

Hey folks, my apologies for not responding sooner. Email has been down at work siince around 1000 hours last Friday. I am swamped with work and didn't check over the weekend. These are all great points and ideas. I am going to drop back and punt meaning read over what you have said, and try to add up the pros and cons plus cost. I appreciate you taking someone ho does not know what he is doing under you wrings and helping me out. Not everyone would do that.

If you go .060,you're done if you have a problem then you're into sleeving,I've passed on more than one .060 over block for that reason.

62Max: Thanks. I didn't know that. If it is at .040 over, and the cylinders are good can it still be stroked? 440source has kits for 30 and 60 over only.
