Alright I need a little help chossing a good cam and carb for my stock 1971 383 in my wagon. It has 2.76 rear end gears and stock exhaust manifolds that are going to be flowing though 2.50 inch daul exhaust. I'm looking for a cam that is going to wake it up and give it some decent power gains and I would also like it to have a noticable idle if possible. I would also like to know what size carb to use with the cam.

With a low compression 71 383 you have no room for big profiles, especially in a heavy car with tall gears. Get a cam that is designed to work with low compression and boost cylinder pressure. Crane, Edelbrock and a few others have something available. 600 CFM max. The factory dual plane intake will do fine but freeing up the exhaust like you plan to do is a huge benefit. Even adding try Y headers will boost the mid range (if there is a set that will fit). Focus more on getting the timing curve and carb selection right. This is the absolute cheapest solution starting with your existing low CR engine to get an all around good runner. If you want more then put in a 9.5:1 440 with a mild cam. And if you want even more then build a turbo EFI motor or swap in a gen III HEMI.

383 Cams

Hi!
Check out one of our members who just installed a HUGHES "Whiplash" cam.
He posted it on you tube.
Type in: 68 roadrunner with whiplash cam.
You will agree, it sounds great!

Have you tried calling cam manufacturers and see what they recommend?

How about a 540 ci stroker at 8.3234:1 compression, stock iron heads, stock cam and remove two plug wires to get a noticeable idle?

You forgot the stock iron intake.

:rolling:This is getting good.
Thank for the help guys. Also to the whiplash cam is designed for low compression motors according to the hughes web site.
