383 intake/carb suggestions

Easy question first. I like and use both Holley and Edelbrock, just not brand loyal to either one. I've had a few issues with both, but more good than bad. The carb was just an example of the bad, but I don't think it was because it was and Edelbrock, it just didn't work for my application. I don't buy one brand of parts and try not to buy just for any name.

I've been told that aluminum heads get worse gas mileage that stock, but have no proof of that. Interesting to see if someone does. Edelbrock said the 600 CFM was good enough up to a 400. I did not check with Holley, so thanks for that information. Did you know which one, since as far as I know all the classic and avenger carbs are vacuum secondaries. Also, I should mention it was an Edelbrock 1406 mechanical secondaries carb, which they clearly state is calibrated for fuel economy. The 1405 I beleive is calibrated for performance. My car stumbled at stop signs/stop lights and really stumbled under harder acceleration. Tuning the carb, I mostly got the stumble out from the stop by making it pig rich. No matter what, I could not get the hard acceleration stumble out. I just happen to have the Holley 750 4160 sitting in the garage so I slapped that on there and it performed far better. My feeling is that it's mostly from the 750 CFM rather than the vacuum secondaries. If I had a Edelbrock 1411 to compare, I could probably give you a better answer on that.

Its fairly easy to jet the 1406 the same as the 1405. All the extra fumes helps keep the kids from fighting in the back seat (cause they are sleeping) I know about the stumble that everyone complains about on the eddies. For the most part you can tune it out. It may be caused by other issues like gearing or the torque converter. Holleys have tons of tunability, on the flip side the edelbrocks are very easy to tune. I just built a 440 for my '66 charger and it has a 750 street demon on top of it. I haven't run it yet but I hear that edelbrock fans are converting at a rapid pace.

Holley recommended the 750 Holley ultra double pumper for my application but I think they were referring to getting max higher rpm power as if I was going to really drive it hard. They said to dial it back to about 85% of those cfm for a more drivable car which would be in the 650cfm range. Either way many people seem to be saying 750 is the way to go.

you think a 3.91 will be that bad for higher end speeds? Ill be screaming at 60mph?
After 20 minutes at that speed you'll hate yourself for doing it. You won't want to take it on the highway for any length of time after you first outing.

Like 69a100 stated, 3.91 aren't any fun on the highway. I put them in my charger just cause I had a set and they are coming out as soon as I get a chance to swap them. If your engine builds any low end torque go with 3.55 or 3.23's

The 383 can handle a 750cfm carb. You'll never know what your engine is fully capable of with a 600 or 650!

I agree with 727, 750cfm vac secondary, dual plane intake, and 323 gears,to much open road around Ottawa to enjoy to run 391s,but,they are fun!

Advice from a fellow Ontario guy! You are both right it is fun to cruise and the 323 aren't that bad. Maybe I'll just switch to the 3.91 to beat my buddy's Audi then switch back haha

If that don't work on the audi give me a call,I'm only for hrs away and I'll bring my 86 turbo z Daytona out and let you adjust his governors with it!! lol

650 to 750 dp. The statement about double pumpers cutting the fuel economy in half is ridiculous.

I run a fairly stock 383 with an edelbrock performer rpm and Holley 1850 (600 cfm) with vacuum secondaries. It took a little effort to tune it, but my baby runs like a raped ape.

I used to have the edelbrock 383 performer, and it had more low end torque, but would crap out at higher rpms . The edelbrock rpm doesn't have the same low end torque, but performs better overall in my opinion.

Oh, and I run it in a heavy beast (68 fury 4 door) with 2.76 open diff. She'll still break the tries loose anytime I smash on the pedal.
