383 Stroker possible Cross Ram

So my 70 sport satellite I am doing a restomod build is in the body shop and has a stock 440 going into it.

A while back I bought a 70 383 motor with 452 heads that I was originally going to use. I dropped it off at a shop in CA (I am in vegas) with 600 bucks to get started on it. Then I forgot about it. For 2 years. The shop calls me last week and tells me I need to get it out of there. I am going to pick it up on Sept 9. From what I am told the heads have had quite a bit of work done to them and the block has been hot tanked, magnafluxed, etc. Needs to be bored to clean up the walls though. Pistons are junk, rods and crank are good.

I am going to leave the 440 in my sport satellite but I am going to build this engine in case I get something else. I always liked the look of the cross ram. How well do you guys think it would perfrom with a 383 stroked to 496 with the ported heads. Honestly I am more about look for this engine rather than performace, I just want to make sure a cross ram would not hinder perfromance too much

When I go pick all this stuff up in California on the 9th I will get all the details on the exact work done to the heads and the block. I comepletely forgot about all this getting married and having my first kid.

Any opinions on this setup. HP achieved, Torque ? Just looking to make a streetable engine

not sure what the horsepower and torque would be but I was going to do the same to my 383 with the cross ram idea you are asking about. I wanted a cross ram on it, my motor is .30 over with indy 440ez's with a stage 2 cnc port job and a hyd. roller cam. I found a n.o.s str box for a low deck with the single 4bbl thermo-quad lid and was going to have a cross ram lid made and see if I could get a cross ram EFI set-up to work on it but the engine builder recommended the 383 victor over the cross ram idea and over the str box with a single 4bbl. My motor was never on the dyno but indy estimated 530-560 hp and about no more than 530-540 lb.ft of torque if it were on the dyno. They said with the str intake and single 4bbl compared to the victor intake I would give up roughly 30-40hp so I choose to go with the victor. I just thought it would look cool if cross ram EFi could be done. I still have the N.O.S. str box never used it for anything.

Just rebuild the motor if all you want is street use

They make the crossram.

If the engine will not be streetable with those heads and a 496 stroke, maybe I should just stroke it by just using a 440 crank and get it to 431 with the .030 bore, buying the kit from 440 Source.

The only cross ram I can think of is the STR 15, and seeing your link that's exactly what it is. This is a fuel distribution nightmare and if your engine isn't dialed in just right (timing, mixture) one good backfire can blow the lid off. If you want to run it get a copy of the old Direct Connection bulletin on how to add the appropriate dams and remove the necessary material. Also the carbs are set up special for those. Air bleeds, jets, etc.. In short, find a dyno shop with EGT probes.

that is why I never did it on my 383 build, to much work for the look. I called indy and muscle motors told them the horsepower I was looking for 500h.p. and how the car was going to be used, exhaust/header size, weight ,gear ratio used and transmission used, they both quoted a combo and I bought some parts from both places since they both took the time to come up with a combo then took all the parts to my engine builder and had him assembly it, one said the combo should be good for 525-550 and 530-540tq and other said it should be good for 530-560 and 540tq. so I hope it is at least 500h.p. if they each said those numbers. my engine builder said it should be lower 500 but will never know unless it gets put on a chassis dyno and calculated. I went with the recommended 383 victor intake over the str/ cross ram idea and gave the build to pro-systems carbs and had them do a carb for it.

Heads are 452s they are ported and polished. They said I should go with a solid roller cam with a half inch of lift.

I have the stock crank, rods, and pistons. The pistons are junk.

I am at a point to decide what I want to do with this engine and I am leaning towards making it a budget build.

With the work done on the heads how do I know what size the chambers are so I can figure out my compression?

I honestly would be happy with anything over 400 hp 400 tq

Any ideas on how to finish this engine on a budget?

Stock 452's were 90-92cc if untouched, did the shop do any milling or just clean up the head surface?

Piston choices suck for 383, If you do anything with the block I implore you to minimally have zero deck height. You could even could go over deck due to how large the chambers are, a qualified builder could do the mock up for you and tell you what the compression would be.

What's your budget?
