Weve took the heads off the 383 today due to rotten core plugs (it makes life easier!) and it has given us a chance to look inside the engine properly. Just a few questions, do the 383's come from the factory with flat top pistons? and it also has a purple camshaft, i read somewhere before that these are a factory performance cam is this true? thanks in advance, Tom

Depends on the year of engine but yes, they came with flat tops and the purple shaft cams are part of the Mopar Performance part of Chrysler. The factory didn't install them....

thanks mate, come out of a 66 (if i remember correctly!) coronet 500... but got told it was a comp cam in it! so was suprised when found out it has the purple cam...its all good though, the engine performs beautifuly

No 383 came with a purple cam. The added power in 68 came from the fact that all B engins from 68 on got the 44o heads. The standered 383 4 barrel was rated at 330 HP. The Road Runner and Superbee was rated at 335 HP. The 5 HP came from a faster distributor advance curve and bigger carb jets.
