#4 Intake I found the leak

The nice thing is I have options. Some only have one motor. I’m lucky that I have 2 well built motors. So for right now from a cash stand point, the 440 will have to lend his lungs to the 511. A couple MLS gaskets some right stuff and time setting up springs and I will be back in business. Barney will Live once again.

I feel your pain after ordering a new crank for mine. We have a local guy, Chris Razor. He is the premier head/block welder in the Detroit area. I'm sure there are others.
Doug

Yeah I seen your post on Moparts. This was the year I had hoped to not have to spend money. I just need to shake my head. When you race you need to spend money every year LOL.

Yeah the shop I used that found the crack told me that as well. That’s an area to steer clear of when porting.
These particular heads I got from a bud who had them done years ago. I’m not even sure who did them. I think I got 150 passes on them before this. The heads that are coming off the 440 were done by the late Nick Wilson. I know they are good and don’t have issue. It will actually be interesting to see if I loose, gain or stay the same.

Here are the flow charts from each head. The 2.25 head is the one that failed. The 2.19 head is the one that will go on.

Well the plot thickens. Pulled the D/S Head today and see scoring on #7. It isn’t terrible. But I can feel it. Pretty sure it’s not going to stay the same that it will get worse. So the 440 with the blue bottle may be the viable option this year.

Can a Jesel roller lifter work fine in a stock 440 block with no bushings?
#7 is scored in my 511, so it’s a boat anchor for now.
Thinking about swapping the roller into my 440. Is that a bad idea without lifter bushings?
That roller should make about the same power in the 440 as it does right now on spray.
I figure I have this stuff. I may as well use it.
Let me know. Thanks.

I believe they need to be bushed, I was just reading something about the jesel lifters in a stock lifter bore and the results were bad 100% of the time. Something about the way jesel sizes them maybe? If I can find the article I’ll PM it to you

It depends on the oil band. You need to make it doesn't uncover at the base circle and at full lift. You can do the math or put the cam and lifters in with no intake. Put the drill in the oil pump, turn the motor over slowly by hand and watch what bleeds. Before i did anything I'd pull that piston and have a look. See if the ring lands and skirt are all beat up. If was just a piece of debris that got caught, I'd clean it up and run it.

That is the second time for hole #7. The skirt was not great the first time. My shop figured they could save it. Obviously not. However #5 was bad last time and it seems ok right now. Porter says sleeve it and run it. I’d still have to order 1 piston for sure.
So for now it can sit till I make a plan.
Another thing he told me is not to run the roller in the 440. He figures in my big car it would be a dog off the line. So I guess I’ll throw the 440 in with the solid cam and run it with the blue bottle. I can buy lots of spray for what it will cost in parts to fix 511.

Wooks how big is your roller?

Razor is the man, I’ve seen him fix some really screwed up aluminum. I had to have him weld up my SR’s a few years ago after the CNC machine was set on kill.

Yes it will come apart. If I want to make our season opener the 440 goes in. Like most builders, there is a waiting list to get things done in my area.
I am sure I’ll need 1 piston for sure.
Wish I had discovered this months ago. It goes to show why you look things over.

Unless that is an "off the shelf" piston, the cost of just one piston is crazy!!

It’s not off the shelf. I hear you on price.
Don’t know if coating will do the trick or not?
It’s one of those situations where I’m damned no matter what I do.

Wooks you forgot to finish the sentence. It goes to show why you look things over at the end of the racing season.
