Hello,
Wondering if anyone has been successful integrating a 5 spd manual trans out of a mid-90's Dodge Dakota with a 1972 big block 400 ci ? Wondering what is involved.
Thx in advance

Even if you went through everything necessary to adapt, can that transmission handle the 400's torque?

No idea. I guess it would be a grenade with its pin pulled? Or has anyone had success mating these two for a time?
I assume the most affordable option for big block Highway friendliness is a gear vendors overdrive? Presently my 72 Satellite has a 727 auto with a ~2.76 rear. I really don't want to modify the tunnel in any meaningful way if I can help it, though a custom console is coming since the car has already been converted from column to a crude floor shift at the moment. I plan on hitting a lot of bugs this summer, so I'd like to get the top end RPM way down.

You'd be surprised how well that 400 would run with a set of closed chamber heads (1.74" or larger exhaust valves), head shims, 750cfm carb, aluminum intake, and a beginner performance cam. Even with log manifolds it does well. Paired with 3.23 rear gears it cruises the hwy at a reasonable rpm.

By the time you bought everything including materials and labor for the fab work, you could probably buy a used GV unit.

I tracked them a few years ago and found the average price to be about 1.2-2K.

The hard part is finding one with a 727 housing extension.

GV rakes you over the cols to trade one in. IIRC they are about $800 bucks and they only give you $100-$200 credit.

Really a 2:76 rear and you want to bring the rpms down. Would be way more practical put a taller tire on it. 2500 rpm 2.76 gear 29" tire = 71 mph
Just about the right rpm range for best fuel economy.

If you're thinking of the Aisin AX15 transmission that was also used behind some Jeeps, they're popular with some s/b Chev and Ford swaps. I haven't seen adaptors for a big block Mopar though. Stock isn't good for more than 300 lb/ft torque but upgrades are available. If you're interested in the gear ratios, they are:
1st. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3.83:1
2nd . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2.33:1
3rd . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. 1.44:1
4th . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . 1.00:1
5th . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .79:1
Reverse . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5.04:1

I'm interested in replacing the 2.76 with something more aggressive while still maintaining Highway fuel economy

Go 3.23’s.
