426 dual carb questions

Hello,

My 69 Charger project came with a 426 which is currently running a single 4 barrel.

(Basically it's a stock 'crate' 426 with a lumpy cam of unknown specs). Wish I had more info but sounds pretty choppy and only pulls 8-9" at idle.

I am going to switch to dual 4's and here is my plan.

Edelbrock 7524 single plane air gap intake.

Edelbrock 1406 carbs. (and just remove choke assembly from front carb).

I already have an air cleaner base for the larger diameter carb tops.


Question is, does the plan to run 2 1406 carb's sound good or is there a better option?

I see Mancini sells a carb/intake package but not sure it's worth spending a few hundred extra on the parts for carbs that are "specially calibrated".

Also, any idea on fitting adapter to run factory style 426 fuel lines on the edelbrock carbs. (which come with a barb style fitting). Looks like I would need ?npt to 5/8-20.

I modified my Carbs Edelbrock 1406 and made my own linkage back in the early 80's. I welded a second throttle lever to my main carb, tapped both carburetor inlets on the passengers side and modified my chrome dome base. Here's some pix.

I went with the 1405 and a manual choke on the rear. Removed the choke plate on the front carb. The 1405 has a heaver needle and seat on the floats and the jetting and springs are a bit richer. I believe the 1406 was built more for pollution. Others can comment on this.

After some trial and error, I went with these parts and I'm very pleased.

This part is a must for Mopar to Eldebrock carbs.

This piece works great for progressive or one to one setup.

This piece was easy to install, it's adjustable between carbs and hasn't ever leaked. I used AN fittings and a braided hose down to the fuel pump.

Maybe Eldebrock sells all of these parts as a kit?
 
I have a very nice Edelbrock single plane air gap Intake with the coil bracket for sale $450 plus shipping if you are interested.

I have a matched set of 1406s off a cross ram manifold from mancini with the fuel inlet on the opposite side. I would be interested in selling. I replaced them with a set of 800s.

The new 650 AVS2 carbs with the annular boosters would be a better choice given the low vacuum of that cam.

Hmm, not sure how much it would matter but all of the avs2 carbs say they are calibrated for single carb applications.

I see some references to 1903/1904 avs2 part numbers for dual quad application but when I called Edelbrock they say none available.
 
That’s just a matter of dialing in the springs, needles and jets which you would have to do anyway with any Edelbrock carb in any application.
 
The new 650 AVS2 carbs with the annular boosters would be a better choice given the low vacuum of that cam.

Runs pretty good so far, just changed to lighter metering rod springs, set idle speed and adjusted idle mixture. Will dial it in on the dyno in the spring.

The AVS2 steps up a bit at the air cleaner stud so I'll need to either raise or remove the bridges on the air cleaner base.

Also, the ports on this intake are raised a bit in comparison to the stock hemi heads. I used Cometic C5598-047 (.047 thick) gaskets instead of the stock thickness .060 which dropped it down a bit. Port floors then lined up perfect. Top of intake port was about .025 above the port on the head which I thought was OK for now.

I plan to pull it apart at some point to do a roller cam and head porting and I'll match it then.

Just thought I would update this and say it drives really nice with the AVS2's. Wouldn't call it crazy fast but entertaining enough for now. :)
