I have found a 440 engine, guy says he thinks it is a seventy "something" model. He said it dont have 906 heads. What other differences are there?

The date is cast on the side of the block. The blocks are all about the same. At some point in the seventies they made the motor mount taps thicker. It could have the 452 heads which is about the same at 906's but have harden valve seats. The heads flow about the same so the 452's would be better because you can run unleaded gas with a no problems.

Thanks I talked with him again he says it is a 75 model truck motor. Sound right? Did they make a 440 that long?

78 was the last year for a 440. Just make sure it isn't an rv engine. I went to look at a 440 advertised in the paper a few weeks ago. It turned out to be a 413 and the heads are different. There is a pad on the front right top of the block that has the engine size stamped otherwise a 75 440 would make a great build.

Car truck or motor home, the engines are all the same. The 452 heads out flow the 906 heads, and with stock valve sizes the hard seats are a plus. Bigger valves would require pressed seats because the hardening don't go that deep. All it takes to make it a HP engine is 67 to 71 steel crank pistons and harmonic balancer. On the other hand I drag raced a 10 secound B body four years with a iron crank and never had a problem. If it came from a truck or RV you will have to change the oil pan and pickup to a center sump.

452 heads have INDUCTION hardened seats. Chances are that will be ground away during a valve job, so don't let that be your deciding factor. Whatever heads you use have hard exhaust seats installed, and I usually have bronze guides (or at least bronze guide inserts) installed.
