What's it Worth 440 block .030 over. Needs one sleeve.

Hello there,
I’m cleaning out the shop and have 3 440 engines. I’d rather be down to two.
I have a 1976 casting 440 block that I built for myself back in around 2002-2003. At around 850 miles, #4 rod broke. There is a crack in that cylinder that can be repaired with a sleeve. At the time it threw the rod, I had another block here so I just built the other one and stowed this away

It will need to be honed. It is a bit dirty.

Look close, the crack is on the left side.

I don’t know what would be a fair price since I have never had a sleeve done. I know that some A body guys like the 383/400 for the chassis fitment but for B body owners, I’d think the 440 would be the first choice. Anyone building a long stroke engine wouldn’t need the pistons, rods or crank but I do have the cast crank from this along with 7 hood rods and Six Pack pistons. I don’t know the value of any of this. I wouldn’t be brave enough to buy used pistons but some people are.
What is a fair price for the block?

My last 340 I had sleeved was around $300.00 for complete job about 5 years ago. It was a good repair and still going strong!

Personally, I'm not afraid of a sleeve. I just wondered what the value is of an engine block that is good except that it needs one sleeve.
I don't like to scrap something that has value to someone.

This is not a sales ad so I don't want to paint outside the lines.
A running 440 that needs a rebuild is probably worth $500 or more but since this one needs the sleeve, that reduces the value.
It has been bored .030 but had less than 900 on it from that point so it would only need to be sleeved and honed.
My guess is that it's value is not high because all factors sort of work against each other.

Knowing that, $200. It's a bare block with main caps that needs a sleeve. You answered your own question. Geez Greg, are you lonely this afternoon and want to chat?

It isn't afternoon here and no, I am not lonely.
One of the things that pisses me off is someone with an unrealistic price when they try to sell something. This is exactly why this addition to this forum was suggested by me for years. I ask when I really do not know.
You don't see me asking this question about stuff that I have that has also been posted for sale by others. When there is a history to learn from, the value is already established.

Like I said, you answered your own question. If a running 440 that needs rebuilt is worth $500, it's not too hard to figure out that a stripped block in need of a sleeve is worth much less. That was my point. The WIW threads are often a waste of time for this exact reason. Do your homework and use a little common sense.

I find masking tape is good way to paint inside the lines. I use the Blue 3M for easy removal and it can stay on windows for up to a month.

I sat a series of aptitude tests in England back in 1991, and discovered I should have been a Plumber. Scored above 90%, and around 82% for electrical.

I took the Sparky jobs.

Most carpenters know how to paint but most painters don't know carpentry. Throw the block up on the classifieds and see what it gets. Several feel that a -2 block is a plus.....

I have a C coded 440 ('67) in my backyard that has no use. Broken ears and cracks in the water jacket.

It is not worth my while dealing with tweakers and drop-kicks by advertising it.

Do I use it to grow Begonia's, or should I just fill it up with Chives and Mint? Tough choice....BTW it is already bored 60-thou over.

Turn it into a coffee table (that you never intend to ever move again).

Greg, I hope you are not thinking that we are 'hairyassing' you..... :poke:

I have actually thought seriously about doing that. I really need 4 x rods and pistons to make that work.

Oh man.... I went to a Dinner/Theatre evening many years ago with workmates. It was the thing back in the '80's - this one was called 'Roman Scandals'

As usual, I got picked as a participant - thanks to my workmates.... my role was to play "Hairy ***" (or pronounce Harriass) .... what a night. I won a bottle of wine but more importantly had a great night out.

I was going to say $300, but ask $200 if you want to get rid of it more quickly.

Can you post a better picture of the cylinder crack? Just curious, that's all.
