Engine #'s

Hi Guy's,

If your looking for the Block casting #'s? Look for them on the side of the block just above the freeze plugs and below the exhaust manifolds. No need to take anything off to see them. Crawl under the car with a LED light.

Passenger side of the block, below #4 cylinder, just above oil pan rail. This is the case for '68 and newer, if you have a '67 or older motor, it will not have a VIN #. Good luck!

Not that it applies here, but the vin was located in a different location in `68, up near the oil pressure sending unit on big blocks.

There can be three places to look for ID. The block casting number in the location mentioned, the partial VIN stamp and the basic engine ID markings on the pad by the distributor.

By the way, Matt is spot on about the 68 VIN location. 69 and later had it stamped on the machined pad above the pan rail.

Thanks for the replies Fella's.
I found the pad You mentioned today, but there are No numbers on it..same as the dizzy pad....unless the paint, which is quite thick is covering them? then I don't have any numbers.

Trying to figure out how the car was imported too Australia with No engine number?

The #s on the pad by the distributer may very well be too light to read because of the paint, but give it a closer look and bust out a magnifying glass to help. You won't find a serial/vin # there though but what you will find is a single letter abreviation for the model year. For example if your engine came out of a `69, it would have an E stamped before 440. An assembly date was also stamped on this pad along with info pertaining to bearing and bore sizes and this will also be where the block would be stamped with an HP for high performance apps. If the pad is blank, the engine could have been a warrenty replacement unit. If the pad is blank you can look on the side of the block for the casting date to determine what year the engine was built for. If this date is earlier then the first half of `67 you will not find any sort of serial or vin number on it.

Hi i also have a 440 in australia, i had to take the paint off the top pad to see the numbers which rear 6T 440 E. 76 block built at "T" ? 440 CI E=cast crank

If "T" is the where it would be Trenton Engine plant, where most of the big blocks were made.

Ok...found on the dizzy pad

7 T 440 E

2 and a funny looking maltese cross type thing.

now I just have to de-paint the lower pad to find the engine number.

Thankx peeps......

Are you reading those #s upside down? It would make more sense to me if it said E 440, which is `69 440. It would also make more sense if the maltese cross was before the 2 which would indicate that the 2nd main bearing is undersized from the factory. The serial number will/should be located on the bottom of the block on the passenger side near the oil pan flange at the rear. This will be a 13 digit # that breaks down like this:
PT=Trenton plant, 440 are the next 3 #'s = displacement, the next 4 numbers are a 4 digit date code based on a 10,000 day calender and the last 4 digits indicate what number of engines built that day. Lastly if the letter "S" appears after the 440 that would indicate high performance use but since you found no HP stamp on the pad by the distributer, I'm thinking you're not going to find an "S" in the serial #.

7T 440 E

2... 1... +............................................................... += maltese cross

so I understand this to be.

'77 Trenton 440 cast crank
with the 2 missing the rest of the month and 1 the first shift, .001 over crank

there are no numbers on the pad above the sump pan.... above this pad are the casting numbers...

My bad, I went out to take a look at 1 of mine, will post some pics I took in the morning, and the serial # is on the drivers side.
