440 Heads debate

383man,
Do you use the 440 EZ (270 cc) or the 440 EZ-1 (275 cc) or the "Little" EZ (295 cc) heads? Also, are you running a stroker kit to get the 493 cid? If so, is it a 440 source kit? Final question, what is your complete set up that gets you into 10.76 @ 124.49 in that fine machine of yours?

Its the basic EZ head the 270 but we opened them to Max Wedge size. Yes it is a 440Source kit that has been in the car for almost 3 years and never any trouble. Its the 4.15 crank in a
.030 over 440 block. I use a solid flat tappet custom grind came thats .584 & .592 with 264 and 270 at .050 and the LSA is 110 and I have it in the eng at 106 ICL. I do use 1.6 Hughes rockers for a total lift right about .630. I had to use the dished pistons to get 10.6 comp and its only dished on one side so I still have quench. Up top is an Indy dual plane intake and a 850 DP. TTI 2" headers and 3" pipes out to the rear bumper with a X-pipe and Ultra-Flow mufflers. 727 I built with a Dynamic 9.5 converter that will flash about 4200. It has 4.30 gears and I use Hoosier radial slicks that are 30 x 9. Suspension is stock other then SS springs and 90/10 shocks up front. I still use the stock gas tank with a 3/8 sending unit and 3/8 fuel line. I also installed a 6 point rollbar. Car weighs just over 3700 lbs with me in it. And of course my best et so far is 10.76 @ 124 and thats thru the pipes on 92 pump. In fact I have never uncapped it or had racing gas in it. Thanks , Ron

383 man, thanks for the info, that is an awesome set up. How does it run on the street? Is it cruise friendly? I don't want to build something so hot that I can't take a cruise with the family.

I'm running the Eddy Rpm's, ported/blended..nothing too nutz, on a 512 stroker. 632HP/696TQ. .520/.540 lift, 1.5 roller rockers. Solid flat tappet Comp. Port matched Indy DP Intake. I don't think i'd I have too much of a problem dumping on another 75-100 horse on with stiffer springs, Single Plane/spacer and a more hefty solid roller, but am quite happy where i'm at with power. This is in a '69 Roadrunner, that runs no problem on 91 Octane pump gas & has excellent street manners.

Point being, the eddy heads will propel you into the 11's no problem, if the rest of the engine/drivetrain/chassis around them is up to the task as well. I'd recommend them & just bought a small block set on that Pep Boys sale.....but just like these guys said, have them checked out first! I changed the locks/retainers on mine right off the bat

Actually it drives great on the street. I drive it everywhere. It has just the right lope in the idle that I love. Driveability is great as it just goes when you nail it in any gear. I have driven it to Carlisle in the summer which is about 90 miles one way. Here is a clip someone took of me leaving on a cruise night. Thanks for the kind words. Ron

Here's my 2 cents: I just bought the Stealth heads for my 1964 383 rebuild. Reasons: 1) The cost to tweak the original heads would have been more than the cost of the heads from 440 source. 2) Messing with the orignal heads would have required lots of other changes to get the compression ratio up around 10:1 (these engines were supposed to be 10:1 but they were not). 3) I shouldn't need to make any other changes by using the Stealth heads, whereas, on my 383, the other guys had a few asterisks and disclaimers. 4) The Stealths appear more stock.

But I'm not building an 11 second car either.

You know I use the standard EZ heads but I ment to say that alot depends on what you want in your build and how much money you have to spend. The Stealth or RPM heads can work great in the right build also. I was looking for 10's on pump thru the pipes so I used the EZ heads as I feel they have more potential when fully ported but if money was an issue I would not hesitate to use the Stealth or RPM heads. Ron

Thanks for the info & the movies!!
I'm tempted to try trade my Bee for a 63-64 max wedge clone type thing.
Thank you for the advice on heads.
I don't want to ask for advice on heads.
The reason I do want to ask, is because so much has come out in the last 10 years that I've worked on my car, I don't want to make a mistake when I buy heads a couple of Months down the road.
I have the 440 source 4.15 (493) crank...
Maybe I just better start a new thread...
Anyway, thank you 383man & everyone else for the advice, and those car videos!
Man, I feel like going in the garage right now!!

Hopefully we all can help you decide. It is nice that so many heads are now out there for the Mopar bigblock wedge and of course now the Trick Flow heads are also out there and I here they work very nice. Good luck with yours and keep us posted on it. Ron
