Hello ......I have a 68 coronet with a 78 440 block. I have 2 problems I can not figure out..1st it has a high rpm miss under a load. I converted it to a electronic ignition when I put the motor in. It is rebuilt with a new tranny and carb. The miss seems to come and go it also has a new wiring harness, coil, wires, plugs, alternator, balast resistor. It is all new please help..The 2nd problem is I have close to 500 miles on the rebuilt motor and it has a ticking or lite knock comming from #1 cylinder down low close to the pan. But I think it could be the oil pump. Does any one know what it sounds like when a oil pump is going out? On the 78 440 block the pump is right in front of #1
cylinder I hope that is what is making the noise..Desperate please let me know if you have any ideas.....Thank you for your time,,,,,,,,,Robert

You could pull the distributer and spin the pump with a drill to see if it is making noise or not I suspect each one would fail differently so saying this is definetly the noise it would make would be hard to do. What kind of cam/lifters and rockers are in it? What are your timing settings? Perhaps valve lash is an issue and they need to be adjusted. Can't hurt to look at the timing and lash for starters if the pump isn't making any noises.

This 78 440 is rebuilt how? By whom? A high rpm miss under load that comes and goes sounds like valve float to me. How high is this high rpm? What cam, heads, valve springs. Ahhh, log me out. I shouldn't be in this conversation.

I thought this too but with 500 miles on it I would hope the springs aren't worn out yet. And I would surely hope the engine builder used the right springs to begin with. But ya never know...
