Hi Folks,

I bought a 440 short block, and I planned to install some heads and proceed from there.

However, I see this jagged metal “tunnel”. What exactly am I looking at, and is it acceptable?

Thank you

That is part of the crank forging. No need to worry about it.

BTW... there are no dumb questions here. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, started with a lack of knowledge and experience, and had to grow into their skin. Never be afraid to ask.

That’s very kind of you. Yes, I’m new to the hobby but loving it.

What cam and heads are you thinking of? And what is it going in? May be time for another thread!

as mentioned just normal factory sloppy casting. I personally try and take a die grinder and clean up and round over castings like that when I have an engine all apart helps relief stress risers in the part under load. Of course, I have been wrenching on cars for 50 years and have only seen a few cranks broken and they were all Chevy's never seen a Mopar crank break. Now the 440 blocks I have broken four of those.

I would not use a crank like that without cleaning it up. And I would be leary of the short block assembled by a builder that would not clean up that situation.
