Hey guys I can only get my 69 rr to start with a prime directly to the carb. The engine is a rebuilt 440, alum heads, new holly model 3310' 750 cfm carb. The fuel pump seems to be pumping fine and once it's started its continues to run. I'm just trying to get it to run decent before I start a rotisserie restoration. Someone started to restore the car, and has all the running gear in and wasn't doing a rotisserie. I will take a post some pics once I start to tear it down over Xmas. Any ideas as to why it will only start with a prime would be appreciated.

thanks

I took the line off from the fuel pump to carb and cranked the engine and it fed fuel at what I thought was a good rate, I fed fuel into a open bottle. And when it's started it continues to run , so this would also make me think the pump is fine.

any evidence of fuel leaking out the bowls while it sits?even if the fuel pump was allowing the fuel to drain back you would still have full bowls.after it sits and is cold, actuate the throttle while looking down the carb.see if you are getting a good instant squirt from the accel pump.should start to squirt as soon as you move the throttle, even a little bit.if that is good,i would look at timming or choke adjustment.

Does the choke work? its that funny thing everyone seams to think they dont need. its purpose it to start the car before you flood it from fanning the peddle or run the battery dead.

Thanks for the help guys. I am getting fuel squirting by pressing the fuel accelerator. As for the choke. This is a brand new manual choke carb. And no the choke cable is not hooked up yet, however I have been starting the car from under the hood and operating the choke by hand to start.

depends on the motor but starting at 12 btdc for initial is probably a good starting point.
