i got 4 months to build me a motor and around 3-3500 money to spend...im looking for 450-500 all motor im think 451 stock crank rods with arp rod bolts and summit pistons which are like 200 bucks cheaper then 440source, clevite bearings, and possibly 440source aluminum heads unported, edelbrock ported rpm intake, carb(dk yet somethin used), 1 in spacer and havent decided on a cam yet....prob stock converter but a built 727 i got laying around and 3.73s out back the car is my weekend driver right now but its time for some power....wut do you guys think ? can i make 500 hp to the wheels with a combo like this? please give input

I think you will find that pricing a stock rebuild will cost nearly your whole budget. This includes boring, crank grind, head work and all parts. Head work alone can be nearly 1/3 of your budget. Also don't forget the all important stuff like radiator, water pump, hoses, carb, intake and so on. Adding special parts like custom pistons, crank, rods, high rate valve springs and hardware, etc... just goes up from there.

In school 3 of us built 440's I spent $7000.00 on my 500ci stroker and the other 2 guy's stayed stock at just over $3500.00 the blocks were sent out for machine work but we did every thing else heads and all. They reused every thing they could where I only keep the block and head castings and used all new parts for every thing and that 7g's was with my discount from my part time employment in a local parts store. So be very carefull!!!

yea i go to auto school too so i get discounts and have alot help but i think machine work is main thing i seen alot of guys build 451 for under 5k and make over 500hp 440source has aluminum water and oil pump 100 a piece my budget is 4k and thats wut it is and all im spending i think you can do it way less then 7k i dont know need head work if im buyin 440source unported heads assembled for 1k if im shootin for 500hp and if i do need head work we have a high performance shop at school that does heads

theturboforums.com is a good forum if you wanna turbo a big block or mopar also

Motors, especially big block Chryslers just aint cheap unless you can literally do ALL the labor yourself. The quote I got for getting my 400 block machined to except a 472 stroker kit from 440 source was over 600 bucks. Along with the kit that''s already over your budget when you include shipping. Now, when you start throwin in heads and all that it gets really pricey. The next motor I build (the aforementioned 400 stroker) will easily come in over ten grand but the way I look at it if you do **** right the first time, especially if your trying to get big power (I'm shooting for around 600 on the motor) than you SAVE money down the road in labor costs, shipping and most importantly, your personal time.
