So I'm wanting to keep my Carter fuel pump with the 5/16th stock outlet and connect it to my new Edelbrock 1406 carb with a 3/8th connection. Edelbrock sells a universal kit, Edelbrock 8135, but the price is nuts for 2 feet of fuel line, a few clamps, some fittings, and a filter I won't even use. What are my options?

I can't find a 5/16" NPT fitting with a 3/8" barb line to screw right into the pump. I can cut the line like I would have to in order to use the Edelbrock kit, buy a few feet of 3/8" fuel line, but what is the compression fitting I need to take this 5/16" metal fuel line to a 3/8inch rubber line? I'm sure I can do this for less than $40 that this kit costs!

My other option is to put the Edelbrock 1720 fuel pump in with the 3/8th output already at the pump. I just don't think I need this $150 fuel pump for slightly modified 318 motor.

Thanks for any advice. Links to any fittings that would work would be appreciated!

Howdy,
I had a similar problem with mine. Car had 5/16th fuel line from the factory. The 440 engine, not the original, has an Edelbrock manifold with a 750 Holley dual feed. The Chrome split lines at the carb are 3/8" and they had just stretched a 5/16" fuel line over them. At the other end in the gas tank, my sending unit went bad. I ordered a new stainless steel 5/16" sender from Classic Industries but it was on back order then discontinued. I had to order a 3/8" sender if I wanted stainless so I did. I decided to drop the tank and replace all the rubber lines with new hoses and clamps. So, I needed to find a double barbed 3/8" to 5/16" brass fitting and guess what. Nobody carries one. I searched every major auto supply I could think of and even went on Amazon and Googled around. It took me days but I finally found what I wanted to use from a place up in Oregon I think it was. It is a marine supply house. You can check them out at (suremarineservice.com). I'm not sure exactly how you want to hook yours up, but until I change my metal fuel lines to 3/8", I just used the barbed adapters with screw clamps at the tank and at the carb supply lines. I think the adapters cost $4.00 each and shipping was about $7.00, I ordered 4 of them as no one else even listed them. It solved my problem cheaply but I do have a short run of 5/16" to and from the fuel pump and filter and out through the adapter to 3/8" up to the carb and the same thing at the tank end.
Good luck to you however you decide to proceed.

I want to say I found a 3/8 to 5/16 adapter at Advanced Auto in the back within a big unit of drawers that the guy took me too. It was brass...but not sure if it was specific to fuel though. Worked, but I no longer use it as I replaced the entire fuel line with 3/8 tubing.

Try this:

These make for a nice clean install on the edelbrock carb using the banjo fitting at the 3/8" outlet and 90" stainless tubing. You can swap the 3/8" hose barb at the end with 5/16" or bush down to 5/16 using a pressure regulator or filter. Many different ways but this edelbrock kit is reasonably priced and gives you lots of options. Brass hose barbs you can buy from any auto parts store.

When I recently changed my 318 2 bbl to a 4bbl Carter Comp AFB I was able to find a brass fitting at O'Rielly auto parts for around $5. They were even able to find a replacement fuel pump behind the counter in order for me to make sure it would fit.
