60s sounding glass packs?

When I had to install mufflers or go to jail, I tried cut-outs from JC Whitney. I was a poor mechanic when I was 16 and they were flimsy. I bailed on the idea.

I had one of those too. (Single exhaust 55 chevy). If I remember, it had a sheet of asbestos packing too. I didn't even try to install it.

I couldn’t wait for the glass packs to blow out.
Remember putting gasoline in them and lighting them to burn out the packing ?
Crazy stuff we did as kids...

I put cherry bombs on my 67 R/T in 1984 ,when they were re-offered for sale back then. I blew all the glass out of them in the first week they were on the car. A 3 minute sprint on the parkway at a "high but respectful rate of speed" took care of that. They're still on the car with the factory pipes. Last Sunday I started the car after 18 years and after refreshing the fuel system brakes and suspension. They still sound killer...

It’s tempting to put a set of glass packs on my GTX but I think a neighbor kid who removed the mufflers on his newer Mustang GT has sort of stressed out the neighbors for loud cars lately. He starts it on remote start with an enormous roar and the lets it idle for 10 minutes before driving off in an equally loud roar. I’ve had several newer Mustangs with loud but mellow sounding systems including a GT350 with the active exhaust. But his car is a bit obnoxious sounding. Not sure how he managed that.

God yes, I don't know what they do with those new Mustangs. They can break your ear drums.
Agree. I haven't heard a single late model fuel injected muscle car (poor term, but I don't know what else to call em)with loud pipes that sounds good, even the really powerful ones.

I’m running purple hornies they sound awesome and loud .

After searching here, didn’t find too many suggestions. Have 69 SuperBee…440 with Hooker Super Competition long tubes. I have no idea what the current mufflers are as cant find a name on them….would like that “old school glass packs “ sound. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance….
They still make Purple Honnies. That's as mid 60's to early 70's as you can get.

My first big block four speed was 7 years old and had burned out glass packs with no packing left when I bought it. I was 16 years old and I thought it sounded perfect. From 3,000 up, it would sing. My best friend could hear me coming from blocks away as he waited to be picked up for night of partying. They were in effect, straight pipes with only one issue. At a certain rpm, the perforated tubes inside would rattle. The previous owner was an adult who loved the car, so straight pipes were not an issue. Me, I couldn't leave it alone. A Judge recommended that I should have OEM mufflers, so I bought Hemi mufflers. I noticed fewer tickets and came to the opinion: a quiet car has more to offer in sound and feels faster to me.

All that to recommend these for the sound of glass packs, but with longevity:

I've been looking into these for my AAR, they make unrestricted chrome tips also, and eliminate stock muffler, so it will look stock. I've heard several hellcats that have these on them pretty impressive.

I've got Thrush Glasspacks on mine - haven't got a sound video, you'll have to take my word for it that they sound epic!

I use to use Thrush mufflers.....but poured in about a pint or two of light weight oil in each muffler, and slowly rotated the muffler to distribute the oil in the fiberglass packing, then installed on the car. Drove the car until the exhaust got hot.....much smoke out the tail pipes (smoke looked like a 2 cycle engine or a broken ring) and after 40-50 miles os so, the fiberglass was all burned out, smoke was gone.....resulted in a nice mellow, deep throated rumble, without any droning........Thrush mufflers were cheap .......

Although not a glass pack, the original Thrush straight through mufflers introduced in 1966 were a somewhat more upscale competitor. I had Cherry Bombs on my first car, 1970 Duster 318 with dual exhaust, and I liked the sound, but I liked our 1968 Sport Satellite 383 with Thrush mufflers better (discounting the bigger engine effect). We bought the Thrush at a Zayre store for $7.99 each.

Some current Thrush straight through mufflers apparently are glass packs, and some are bright red so they look like Cherry Bombs, not like their cool painted ancestors.

Regarding the original question, although I don't run any now, from what limited examples I have heard, the modern versions of the Cherry Bomb glass pack, the Thrush glass pack, and the similar Flowtech glass pack are probably the closest to the original Cherry Bombs. The original Thrush seemed to have a deeper, more full sound that might not be mimicked as closely in the current offerings. All my current vehicles have original Mopar, stock type Walker, or Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers. So, no current or vintage Thrush in the lineup now.
