I need a new tank for my '65 Coronet. I have a decent '63 tank for a spare I planned to use. Looking at new tanks, I see a different part # for '62-'63, and '64-'65. Can anyone verify the difference between the two, or is there a difference ? Want to make it a quick changeover, instead of tying up the garage space, and waiting for parts. Thanks...

Think 62/63 used an o-ring for filler neck. Khrysler Kid probably knows if this is right. Does your 63 tank have the o-ring? My 65 Dodge has the later grommet.

Great read on that previous Post ! I'll have to get my '63 tank down from the loft, and check that out. That may be the difference ? Thanks for that info Fran...

There must be a difference between the years. All of the repros are using the grommet instead of the O ring so that's not going to be a factor when useing a new one. Might be a problem useing the '65 filler neck in the used (original) '63 tank. The '63 useing a O-ring and the '65 useing a grommet. Maybe the '65 grommet would work in the '63 tank?

All four years use a single strap and are 15 gal. There might be a difference in the shape or they would be listed as '62 through '65. Not saying that they aren't close enough that you could make the '63 work in the '65. Only way to tell is to have them side by side. You might have to push it back out of the shop if they don't swap. Maybe a gas can in the trunk? Let us know what you find.

VanDan when you said the tanks have different P/Ns is that factory or aftermarket P/Ns.
The factory would change P/N when they went from o ring to grommet. IMO.

That was aftermarket. I did not check on Mopar Part #'s...

64 Polara has the grommet style filler.

Can anyone verify the difference in the filler tubes, between '63,'64 & '65 Models, or are they all the same ? Will the early O-ring style work with a grommet. I have a decent '63 tank that I wanted to use in my '65, and use a new tank in my '63, as it's a complete restoration, compared to a make-over on the '65...

Im betting they are all the same where they go into the tank. The lenth and bend in the filler tube might be different.

When buying the repro tank, they changed where the filler tube goes into the tank with a gromment. You still use your original tube. Is the '63 a repro tank? Have you tried the tank under the car to see if it will work?

No, I haven't tried the swap yet. I bought a new repro for the '63, which had a decent original tank. I didn't think I could clean it up enough to hang under a completely painted chassis. I'm thinking I could possibly use it on the '65, which has a nasty tank in it now. Just wondering if I need to swap the filler necks, or am I lucky that they may be the same ?

For what its worth. 2 years ago I swapped my 62 Belvedere original O-ring tank for a new repo tank that used a rubber seal instead. The original O-ring style neck worked fine. About a year later the new cheap Chinese rubber seal split for no reason as the neck was in perfect alignment with the seal and tank hole. I replaced the split stock single lip seal with a 1970-74 E-Body seal as it has a double outer neck seal and is a much better seal. It worked fine. There is a single screw bolt that holds the neck in place in the neck tunnel from the trunk inside, make sure you shim(use spacer or flat washers on the screw bolt between filler tube and trunk tunnel as needed) the neck so it is going straight into the tank (not cocked up or down)when you install the neck into the tank whether your using the old style O-ring or seal ring. The E-body seal is a much better seal.

OK, I did a quick check on the two tanks. The '63 is out of the car, the '65 is still in place. The filler necks each have a different mounting tab on them, so they will need to be swapped. Since the new tank for the '63 uses the newer rubber seal grommet, I am assuming the '63 O-ring seal filler neck will work on the new tank, by the feedback I have received so far. I am still wondering if the '65 filler neck, with a grommet seal, will work on the '63 tank, which is an O-ring seal, or can I just use a grommet in place of the O-ring ? May not have the clearance to fit the grommet ? Are the '63 O-rings available anywhere ? Does anyone happen to have an extra '63 filler neck available ? Thanks

Hey Fran, will a grommet filler neck be capable to use an O-ring ? Maybe I should be looking for another '63 filler neck, and leave my used tank set-up as is ? Hopefully I could mod the mounting tab from the '63 to work in the '65 ? Thanks for that info too !

That I don't know, but bet is yes. Had a 62 Dodge many years ago and now a 65 Dodge. You have filler necks for both tanks measure diameter of each.

Do you have a International Truck or any make commercial truck dealership near you? Try them. We use to keep all kinds of O-rings and fittings.
