66' Charger 318 Poly a bit doggy

Hey folks it's been a bit since I've posted here as I have been working on a 65' Fury with a 318 Poly. Anyway my wife inherited a 66' Charger with the 318 Poly engine. Her father had the engine rebuilt, blocked was decked, 218 .461 camshaft was installed along with and electronic ignition. A 4bbl edelbrock 600 sits on top of a weiand 7503 single plane intake. The ole girl is pretty doggy, the 65 Fury 318 I built is A LOT faster with the stock 2bbl dual plane intake, a 2bbl holley 500 with a 264 .450 cam, mechanical ignition, tti headers, the heads were cleaned up and milled to give 10:1 compression. On the 66 Charger I haven't played with the timing or checked the valve lash on it yet but I feel like it should be much faster than my Fury. I'll play with the timing and check valve lash later this week/weekend. I have thought about putting the stock 2bb intake back on and putting a 2bbl holley 500 on it since it seemed to work for the Fury but any other insight would be great and appreciate it a ton!

It's the intake manifold I reckon. They suck a ton of torque below 3,000 rpm and only really work with high revving engines with deep gears and a high stall converter.
A factory 4 barrel manifold is a much better choice.
You can can a good price for the 7503 if you sell it.
 
The single plane isn’t helping the bottom end torque much a dual plane would be better. But since its what you have I wouldn’t change it out. Check the timing. The old poly wants lots of timing. I’d start with 12 idle, 34 Mechinical and 52 with vacuum advance. What kind of carb does it have? Carb tuning and advance can make or break an engine..
Also was the cam degreed? With highway gears 3.23 and taller and if it’s small block cruiser I often advance the cam 1-2 degrees and pick up some bottom end torque. It takes a bit of the top end out of it but how often are you running 6000rpm +? I’m sure the engine just needs a good tune and should feel better.

That's what i have heard, I can get my hands on a stock 4bbl dual plane for around $500 I have the stock 2bbl intake and can get holley 2bbl 500 for around $185-$200 which would definitely wake it up. There is definitely options I have available but wasn't sure if I was able to make it a bit better with what was on there right now. I'll keep yall posted on what I decide. So I haven't checked the timing on it yet but the Fury i built is at 38 degrees at 3000 rpm all in eithout vac advance which she seems to like and can't go much more than that with the stock distributor. The Charger has stock gearing which I believe is 2:71 which is terrible but the Fury has 2:93 and will rip a tire. On the Charger I'm not really running I would say above 4500 room due to gearing. I'm going to tinker around with the timing and such and see what happens and read the plugs. The carb that is on there is edelbrock 600, I can get the model number for you later this week. The only thing I've done to the carb is making it idle smooth so I definitely need to play with that as well
 
An out of the box Edelbrock is almost certainly too lean.
You should get a strip kit and an assortment of pump squirter nozzles.
A 66 Charger is quite heavy and a 2.71 gear is not helping.
 
OMG Rooster.

My Mopar mate here in the UK is also called Roosta and he has got a 65 Fury Poly car and a 65 Fury Wagon too!

His 65-Fury has a 402ci Poly stroker which he built with the aid of Gary Pavlovich in San Diego.

If you go onto Facebook and look up 402 Poly in a Fury, he will be there lol.

We tried the wieand and 600 Holley on the 318 before the stroker build and it was POO lol.

It kills the bottom end and gearing has to 3.23 and above to over come convertor stall issues...

Hope this helps from the Limey Fury guys.
 
Currently doing a stroker Poly for my 64 D200.
It’s an old skool 360 Poly build with the internals from an 360LA engine.

I’ve been looking into doing a LS Chevrolet intake and exhaust like the Hinkles 426ci Poly build.

Would love to the 426 build too, but those parts they used were way too exotic for my simple machining skills lol
