66 Coronet Rear tire size.

The search came up empty? I have a chance to buy a really nice rolling chassis, but not sure what tire size the car will take/ I have a 71 duster now with 15x8 with 4.5" BS and an actual
L-60x15 thats fits fine. Will that not fit in the Coronet wheelwell? It looks like a tight wheelwell.

I believe 275's will fit with the wheel lip cut.

I have 235/60R15's on my 66.

We fit 275/60-15(4.5 bs) on my brothers Coronet but ended up cutting the wheel wells. It looks like a 5 or 5.25 backspace would be ideal and would eliminate the need to cut the lip.

Ok thank you very much. I only have $400 into the rear wheels, i can sell thm and get a deeper backspace. Its not real critical i guess, i will go with what fits, its a street car not a race car so i want to keep it a clean ride.

I played it safe on my tires and rims the Cragars are 4.5 bs , there is room to go bigger but like I said I played it safe and for me I like the way it looks a lot.

I have a 66 and 275s are too tight. with a 1/4 inch to the outside fender flange the inside rubbed sometimes and was super close to the springs,springs move with the axle no big deal but i had to minitub for clearance inside.

I also had 235 60 15.

That's probably the largest "safe" size, although there could be a case for 255s with the proper backspace wheels.

I really hate to see people cut clean quarter panels, or cut/roll the lip, just to get one size larger tires on.

If you look up in the well, you'll see the inner fender has a bend/bulge that encroaches from the outside.

Your tires will hit this before they hit the lip, so IMO cutting/rolling the lip is a waste.

A 255/60/15 with a 8"rim with a 4 1/2 inch backspace is a biggest you can go on a stock set up. I'm running 275's with the same rim set up but I had to shorten the axle to do it

ok well thank you all very much for the reply. I wont be buying this car at this time, the gentleman wants way too much money for the car as a roller. I will continue to build my duster. I would love to have a 66-67 charger to the stable as well, i see there is one for sale on here for a good price in California.

I have 275/60's on a 15x7 steel wheel with 4 3/8"BS. 67 Coronet SS springs in the upper hole. Fit fine. I did trim lip, but they fit even without. Tight, but it works. Changing tires are a slight PITA. I don't need to hear 7" is not ideal. I know that. It has been that way for years and still pulls the front wheel at the track.

I see this is an old thread and I am sure this is a common question but trying to do some research on rear tire size for a 66 coronet. Sounds like 255/60 on 15x8 will work without any mods. Will 255/70 on 15x8 work in rear without any mods? Everything is stock on the car. Thank you.

I don't see why not. All depends on back spacing
