In 1987 --- still got it!!

A few years ago, I was asked to authenticate a 1966 Belvedere II purchased locally with a Hemi, 4-speed in it. After looking it over, I was able to tell the new owners that it was indeed a real deal 426 Hemi 4-speed car. This Belvedere II was built in December 1965, and as such, had the HP2 callouts on the front fenders. The late 1965-dated block had been bored and stroked to 472 ci. The casting date on the block was too close to the build date of the car to be original in my estimation. It had 4.10 gears in its Dana 60. The original 11" bellhousing had been changed for a 10.5", and now mounted a mini starter. All the Hemi-specific additional chassis strengthening pieces were there and matched the patina of the rest of the car. The data plate called out the 426 and 4-speed options. It also revealed that this car was originally painted Lilac Metallic, although it was now painted Resale Red. The car was also missing its Belvedere II-specific trunk lid trim panel. I was surprised to discover that the long side trim pieces were all chromed die cast parts, instead of stainless or anodized aluminum trim that I expected. Was this because of early build date, or did all '66 Beldvedere II's have cast trim? The car was later sold, and I have lost track of it.

How close was block cast date and build date, if you remember. My was 1/19/66 engine build date was 2/15/66. Have a block cast 1/21/66 engine build date 3/16/66. The day dates are +/- a few days.

If I remember right, the car build date was middle of December 1965. Casting date of block was sometime in November 1965.

My 66 Belvedere II has a build date of 1/19/66 and has the aluminum trim, with 426 call outs on bottom of fender, also came thru with Belvedere I tail lights.
