67 318 running hot after water pump replacement

If overfilled, they will puke. When cold, coolant should -typically- be up to top of the core itself.
So, if it is actually overheating, did you check ignition timing? As well, is it running well enough that an overly slack timing chain can be ruled out?

Now for the fun (NOT!): it may be possible that your exploded impeller left a piece or two that is blocking a passage. I hope that you pieced it back together to make sure that no big pieces were missing.
You might try to check for hot spots with a temp gauge.
 
the motor has less than 5,000 miles on it and runs flawlessly to include hot and cold starts.

Im going to pull the water pump off when I get back and have a look.
 
You said you replaced the fan clutch, did you mount the fan blade in the right direction?

I checked that as well. If it was on backwards it would hit the a/c compressor pulley.


I also want to mention that I replaced the fan clutch about 1 month BEFORE the old water pump **** the bed and it never ran hot then either.
 
Well folks it was a bad brand new thermostat. Put a new one in a 160 and it runs cooler than ever.
