67 Satellite Fuel Sending Unit Replacement

I will be replacing mine in the next few weeks. I sent my original sending unit out for repair. The reproduction units never seem to be accurate. I'll let you know what I find as far as R&R goes. I'll be damned if I'm dropping that tank!!!

I have done it on my 67s without dropping the tank. I think it helped if I put jack stands under the front spring hanger and let the axle hang down to get some room, but it's been long time.

Heard good things about the Spectra Premium units so this is what I am going with. If what is in there is the stock unit it has been cannibalized for an EFI return line, and no longer reads correctly. I am switching back to a carb, so just need the 1 outlet.

It can be done without dropping the tank. It can be difficult to remove and install new sending unit locking ring, though. For the little extra work involved, it is likely just as easy to drop the tank.

It’s not at all easy to drop a 66-67 b-body tank.

Fortunately it is easy to swap the sender in the car. Let the rear axle hang down. Even with a Dana 60, just let it hang down.

You may want to use your old lock ring. Some repo rings don't lock well, thinner metal.

Just curious if anyone else has replaced theirs, and if you drop the tank or if it can be done without? Looked around on here but nothing 66-67 specific.
HI, im not sure how you would do it otherwise...nice time to check retaining hardware etc...maybe check the filler tube rubber seal..which ever way you decide to do it: make sure your tank is darn near empty and reproduction sending units, at least the one I used is not accurate.. The Spectra Premium replacement tank was a nice piece for the money though. All of the retaining reproduction hardware is cheap and actually better than adequate..good luck!

I’ve also done it without disturbing the tank. Just run the gas down fairly low get the car up on jack-stands or a lift and it’s not much trouble.

You can do it with the tank installed, but getting the lock ring back on is a real pain. It's not necessary to drop the axle (at least not on my car), but it's probably a good idea. I'm going to try that next time.
My current sending unit is the 3rd one I have tried. It reads fine on the bench, but when I install it, a full tank reads 1/4. So I think will need to bend the arm to get it to read right.

Currently, I'm procrastinating on that particular task.

New lock ring gaskets are crap, too.

Mine leaked after a little more than a year. Clearly staring to disintegrate.

Replaced it with a red toilet valve gasket and it hasn't leaked in over 5 years.

Using the red toilet valve is certainly a unique way to attack the problem of sealing, but, heck, if it works like you say , then thank you!!

Keep an eye on that plumbing gasket, had a friend burn the car down with a plumbing gasket under hood on the fuel inlet fitting.

not really made for fuel.

I've been keeping an eye on it for 5 years.

As stated the repro gasket quickly deteriorated, causing a leak.
It was absolute garbage.

As others have said, you can do it with the tank in the car. Mine was leaking, so last year, I removed it and found a home made gasket was in there even though the sender and tank were pretty new. I bought a new lock ring and gasket that was the correct thickness. I’m not sure where I bought it. I’ll try to find out.

But you will find that with the correct thickness lock ring and gasket, it is a total beeotch to put back together. I’m sure the neighbors heard me swearing. I bought a lock ring tool, which I had to bend to get it to clear everything and as I used it, it bent more. It’s garbage now.

Clean out where the sender and lock rig go, no grit or dirt. Put the Seder and gasket on and get it sitting flat. Hold it flat to the tank while you put the lock ring in and get it turned slightly to engage the tabs. Now tighten it up With your tool of choice.

It's in! Getting some other mods buttoned up tomorrow so she can hit a few more cruise nights while the weather stays nice. Appreciate all the info from everyone. @lilcuda I believe the neighbour likely heard a few "choice words" emanating from my garage as well! :cursin:

It happens.

I struggled with it for way too long to get that lockring to click into place. I used the punch and hammer technique, then screwdriver, with no luck. I used one of those tools from megaparts and it was a heavy duty unit. I engaged it and tapped it with a hammer and it went right into place. Can't say enough good things about that tool. I haven't filled the tank yet to check for leaks or sender operation.
