Need help if you can. I know I had labelled everything 15yrs ago but I'm having an issue with hooking up the alternator, it has 2 fields but I'm not sure which wire goes to where. I have a green wire coming off the field side of the voltage regulator but which field does it go to on the alternator? and what about the other field on the alternator I don't see a wire for it. Also would like to know what the Brown wire on the firewall junction box, third horizontal row down and first row across starting from left to right is. In the same horizontal row third from the left is a grey wire that I'm not sure about either. any help would be appreciated. Here is a pic of the carView attachment 218205

In 68 the correct alternator has 1 field wire and uses the points type vr. The alternator with 2 field wires uses the electric vr. The 68 1 wire system can be easily adapted using the hot wire from the 68 vr and the correct wiring for the 2 field alternator. Will not make any difference which wire goes to field terminals as long as they are both connected. On my 68 ran a jumper wire threw original vr and used to feed electronic vr placed under wind shield washer bottle and 2 short field wires to alternator.

Thanks, I've also been checking some of the other posts on here and they said to jump one of the field on the alternator to ground, I think that might be how it was set up.

Mopar 3 B speaking about your washer bottle what colour wire is going to that? is it grey by chance?

Yes, one field can go to ground ONLY if you have the old style (pre 70) regulator. A real easy way to do that is to remove the insulator under the field terminal and replace it with an electrically conductive washer.

That's great guys, thanks. I'm getting close to firing this thing up and breaking in the rebuilt motor.

There is 1 grey wire coming from the fire wall, any idea what that runs?

The gray wire is usually a factory tach but trace it to be sure. Factory tach wire comes through the firewall to the right of the bulkhead connector (engine compartment view).

Meep-Meep my doesn't have a tach, maybe that's and extra one on my car then. I did trace it back to the main fire wall wire plug ins, its in the 3rd horizontal line from the top down and is in the 3rd row from the right. Regarding the alternator mine was sending power right back to the battery and not connected to the ammeter as I have read is that ok or not.

Low oil pressure switch wire. Is this what looks like a male end with a slot in the end on one side of the connector? If yes will clip onto low oil pressure switch.

It has no end, its a cut wire with duct tape but my notes rubbed off of it. I don't think I have that switch on the block, where should it be?
