@The Rebel, if your looking for correctness, the original hood pads were molded to match the contours of the under hood support bracing. The hood pads that you reference are a die cut fiberglass style mat that will work fine and is more than half the price of the molded pads. The molded pads are also quite a bit more to ship due the size of them and that they have to be shipped flat vs the generic mats which can be rolled up into a small package. So if correctness is important, be aware of what you are ordering. Only two different manufacturers of the molded pads, REM and Repops.

For hood pad clips, the metal clips for your car was used from 66 to 71. There is at least three different manufactures of these clips and none of them work as well as the originals. If possible, source out good originals. The plastic clips look nothing like the metal clips, but are much easier to use.

Thank you very much! Yes, looking for OEM style padding.

Are these the companies you were referring to? Neither of them list prices.

REM Automotive, INC
Repops Automotive Reproductions

Any good leads on OEM clips?

Looking to get a kit and saw on DMT that these are offered with metal clips as well as plastic clips.

The websites wording is confusing so what clips are correct for a 68 Charger?

Thanks in advance!

I think I about broke my thumb trying to install those metal clips, They will chip your paint up as well. I went to NAPA and bought some plastic "christmas tree" style clips. They worked way better and I didn't need to be nut and bolt original.

I assume so Roger, seeing the RJL part number. I'd have to dig through 6 year old paperwork to find an invoice.

As for REM, they do not sell direct... only through vendors.
Thanks Wayne. I'll reach out to them to confirm if those are the correct ones for a 68 Charger.

Another question. I assume all cars had these when assembled at the plant, right?

Ok, in looking at my build sheet looks like mine didn't have the undercoating or the under hood pad??

Great! As for a hood pad, I don't know about '68, but in 70 you only got one if you had the optional J55 Full undercoat.

@Richard Cranium did any of your past chargers come without the under hood pad from the factory?

Hey guys, looking to get confirmation based on my bs, my car would not have come with one???

I would have thought they all came with one but looks like if you got the undercoating then you automatically got the pad.

Would like to know why it was a requirement that you needed the undercoating to get the pad.

My 68 Charger 383 auto A/C car had undercoating but no hood pad. Still don't. No idea what the criteria would have been.

As I noted before Roger, Full undercoat and hood pad went hand in hand in 70 and looks the same in 68. All cars got some under coat, but not full unless coded for it or dealer applied.

As Wayne states, the J55 option would include full underside coating of the frame, floor pans, inner fenders, etc. with the heavy asphalt based undercoating as used back in the day. The J55 option would also include the molded hood pad. This option was marketed as a "sound deadening option".

Like the light package, radio package, etc., these were options and not all cars got the option from the factory. All cars did get undercoating in the inner fenders. Just like the quality of the paint jobs, if you look at original cars, the undercoating varies from car to car. Also, back in the day, many dealerships were sending cars out to be "Ziebart Treated" which only added more undercoating to the car.

Roger, so in your case, the lack of the J55 would mean that your car did not receive the under hood insulation and the full under coating option. It can be added but to be correct, then technically, the car should also be fully undercoated on the underside of the car.

Thanks guys for all of your help, much appreciated!

In 68 the J55 code didn't exist but the code in 68 was 579, so in my case as the build sheet shows my car did not come with the undercoating or pad, so I've decided I'm not going to get the pad, which will save me some money.

Now is it possible that perhaps the dealership added those options after the car was delivered, I'll never know, as my car was a sold car when built (code on fender tag u1 / code on bs 691 - expedite).
