68 GTX Project

Hi yalls, thought I'd start a thread and share some pixs of my project. It is a "fairly" solid GTX. I'm starting in the back and starting to replace all the floor panels.

Bad day hauling the new "parts" car home! 3 hours waiting for u-haul to fix the flat tire

The parts car (69 GTX as found) too bad it was smash so bad in the late '70s I'm told.

Spent the day getting it off the trailer and peeling the metal off the front of car exposing what I'm told is the numbers matching 440. So far it looks like the motor survived the crash expect for the water pump housing (hit me up if you have one forsale!)

Then of course is the scrap pile getting ready to be turned into a new Hyundai after I strip all the OEM fasteners and anything else usable.

Well the smashed 69 I think will not survive, the one I'm bringing back is the Brighter Green 1968!!

I wonder too! No matter what, it didn't turn out well for the driver. The air bags didn't even deploy

hey rakort, pull them turn indicators off the front fenders if they look good! also antennae bezel and hood springs in junk pile. kudos for the work that's ahead for you.
windshield didn't break!

Yes the windshield is broke, it is in pieces everywhere! At some point, someone put another b-body windshield over the "hole" in an attempt to keep the water out I suspect. The overlay windshield I strapped down with a ratchet strap to keep it from blowing away during its final ride!

I will be sifting through the junk pile for sure! I plan on combing every piece for fasteners and anything else that could prove useful later.

Yes the trunk lid is nice, the lower lip is perfect!

That donor is going to be handy, I'd leave it mostly together if possible so you have a reference if needed while building the other. Nice score

Factory 8-track, 2 small speakers in the ends of the dash (some kind of stereo upgrade?), Auto, console shifter, maybe some other options too, not sure yet. Maybe I'll find build sheet!

In one of the picture you can see the harmonic balancer. I'm thinking that is the smaller balancer for a forged internally balanced crank. Can anyone confirm?

Some updates on the progress! Pulled the front end off the GTX today, and now the bad *** 440 sits on the stand in the garage waiting to breath again!

great project! does the 440 turn over or is it stuck?

It "seems" to be stuck, but I didn't push the issue with a pipe and the harmonic balancer bolt! I see no evidence of moisture in the engine. It had a crunched up hood over the engine for the last 25 years as it sat in the dirt and rusted the bottom of the car out. I can't pull the dipstick (Its crunched) and haven't drained oil or pulled the filter yet. When I pull the oil filler / breather cap I see no evidence of moisture. I'm thinking it may run! At the minimum I'm super glad the block isn't busted, the freeze plugs are in tack so I'm hoping it survived!
