68 GTX Project

Your fender tag reads like this. Yellow with a white over green vinyl bucket interior, 440, green upper door frames and green accent stripe. Early built car on August 23, '67, b4=buckets, h7=fender turn signals, R1=economy am radio, X2=tinted windshield only, so it was a non ac car. 3.23 non sure grip rear axle, 1-9=either wide sill moulding or lower body moulding , 2-5=is probably drip rail moldings and 7-8=is wheel lip moldings. Since a console isn't called out I'd say it was a buddy seat column shift car.
One crank was available in '68, they were all forged.
If you could post any info up that you know on the parts car or even get it into a registry along with the one you're building that would be great too.

Thanks for the decode! That pretty much jives with what I thought/known about the car. Curious to me that is a non sure grip.

OK, here is the parts car tag, I literally extracted it last night from a crumpled up inner fender well. Any decoding here would be appreciated as well!

Where are appropriate registries located?

Parts car update. Continued the front to back striping of the parts car. Cleaned a few things off the firewall including AC hoses, steering column, and master cylinder to name a few.

Went to the Jefferson car show and swap meet this weekend and scored:

detmatt1, is there no information regarding the rear end / differential? I've got two rear ends, one apparently is a non-suregrip but wondering about the one in the '69. Eventually I will get the carriers out to verify what is what, but curiosity kills the cat!

You definately have a project there. Nothing like finding a clean front clip, cab and bed for a truck, eh?

OK, it's B-Body mayhem week at my residence this week as I strip both the '69 GTX parts car and the '68 the project car! There are B-Body parts everywhere!!

I've not got that far, but everything AC related is forsale and I'll get some posts up on that soon!

Here's another '68 GTX owner rooting you on from Tennessee!

Wow awesome thread can't believe I missed it very cool you found that 69 parts car sad it was wrecked but to have the original 440 untouched in there is killer.

The 440 is sweet, I haven't taken it apart yet, but from what I can tell it's all in tact and original. The '69 was largely unmolested so it is going to be a huge parts resource for the '68 as the '68 was largely a stripped shell when I bought it.

The parts pile continues to grow! Spent part of today gutting the interior. Now on to the windows and regulators.

Good luck on the project. Take your time and do it right and you will be glad in the long run. From 1 GTX owner 2 another!

A 68 GTX owner of 43 years here. Had the car stored for about 35 of those years. Going to start following your thread and rooting you on. If you have any questions I'd be happy to help. I'm not as bright and resourceful as you - having the car restored by a friend. Almost done - like in the next few weeks or so.

Good od luck you have. Great car to work with and it will be a beauty when your done!

Cool project and a great base to start with. Have fun and keep those updates coming!

Well the storms forced a stop on progress on the '69 tear down, no worries, plenty to do, switched modes to the inside GTX, aka the the '68
and as a bonus it got a wash!
20150608_195954.jpg

So I continued stripping the the doors on the 68. I have been stripping these cars in parallel, comparing notes and collecting up a set of parts to put the 68 back together.

20150608_202647.jpg20150608_202654.jpg20150608_202956.jpg

This was one disappointing find the original 68 drivers door. Note the top hole for the latch "punched in" and a crack along one of the holes, no worries, I have patch panels available :)

OK, anyone else realize (or maybe is CK "common knowledge") there is a difference between 68 and 69 door window mechanisms. The 68 has a series of nylon blocks to help guide the window that the '69 doesn't have. What are the other differences between a 68 and 69 door? I see they have year specific replacements when you order a new one!
20150608_204733.jpg20150608_204747.jpg

OK, I stripped 4 doors in the past 2 days and 3 out of the 4 had this slider bracket broken off of the window slide channel.....hrmmm. This is the only one that was intact. Anyone have a good repair for this?

20150608_204813.jpg

So the downer for the day was the rust holes found in the 68 passenger door. I thought this door was pretty solid until I carefully removed the weather strip. Ohh well, good thing for available patch panels!

So that's what I did today!!

Hopefully one day I'll actually be able to post pixs of something that is being reassembled.

BTW I am convinced the best money I spent on this project yet was getting a junk sister car to part out and merged nuggets into the '68!

I think you're right! Having a donor X. Is a big deal. There are so many similarities between the 68/69. Take things one step at a time and keep chronicles of your journey on this site and in your garage. You'll find a lot of help here when you get more specific on your needs. Dude you're going to have one awesome 68 GTX. Trust me I have one and they're mega Mopars.

there are worse things to find in your garage, right?

Its a good day when a third pedal shows up in your car!
