Hi, got a question, got a 68RR 383 automatic, engine is a 71, anyhow Plymouth book shows 7.5 degree's for timing, Chiltons shows 5 degree's, set at approx. 7 running ok hooked up vacuum to distributer and when put into gear, car stalls. So do I adjust fuel mix and then high idle , carb is a Edlebrock 1411 also Edlebrock intake. Phil

Stock cam? What RPM are you idling at?

Engine could be worn or the cam could be bigger than stock. Stock distributor? I'd start at 10-15 degrees initial. Have a helper put it in gear with their foot on the brake, and adjust idle until it idles nice in gear. Put it in park and make sure the idle doesn't come up too much once there is no load on it. If good put back into gear, adjust your idle mixture screws for best idle again, reset idle speed.

If you really want to set the timing up right you need to know how much mechanical advance is in the distributor you have.

Thanks, Rebuilt eng, new comp cam, stock rebuilt distributor, on the degree marker has 0, a line half way then 10, then the word before, other side of 0 is the same except the word after, Plymouth book says 5 degrees before, chiltons says 7.5 degrees, today set at between 5-10, running good, readjusted fuel mix and idle screws still stalling, so should I go to 10 or higher and adjust down with idle screws? No tach set up yet. Don't know how to check how much mechanical advance in the distributor

Which Comp cam is it? That will really determine how much initial you need.

To check the total timing you need a dial back light or a timing tape, do you have either of those?

What distributor are you using?

What cam? Stock converter? Might need some stall if you have a real cam in that thing.

I have a dial back timing light, with a bit of cam in it I usually spin it to about 3000-3500 rpm and set total timing to about 36-38* total timing. Chrysler big blocks usually love it around there.

Thanks for the help, also found out had bad new distributor, vacuum advance blown, replaced dist, timing set, and stalling is no more. Phil
