'69 Coronet R/T Question about Brake Options

Hopefully this is an easy question- I have an early build (Oct '68) 1969 Coronet RT that is a power assist drum brake car. It has the Dana rear end but 10" drums on the back and 11" drums up front. Is this a factory arrangement or were the brakes changed on the car at some point?

some one likely changed them. they should be 11"x 2-1/2" on rear. the parts are on moparts right now 4 sale if you do not have them! B Body for sale section.

Somebody has cobbled that together. Why would a Dana 60 rear EVER have dinky 10" brakes on it?

Was the car originally a Dana car? Or did somebody add that too?

Thanks for the reply. I assumed they must have been swapped out at some point. I thought maybe there was a possibility that earlier cars may have had the 10" brakes OEM. It's an original Dana rear end. Not sure why someone would have gone through the headache of downgrading the brakes.

Already replaced the shoes and hardware. The brakes work just fine so I will leave them alone for now and upgrade later on.

it all depends how the car was optioned out for brakes.

something might of been changed with the 11 front/10 rear
but you would need buildsheet/fendertag info
to know for sure whats up.

most 4.10 cars had 10 inch brakes
and 3.54 cars had the 11 inch ones

this is for 70 ebodies just for a example

082 - 3.54 s/g, Dana 60, 11" rear & front drums, (A33 Pkg)
083 - 3.54 s/g, Dana 60, 10" rear drum - front disc, (A33 Pkg)

I agree with you...however, and back to the question...the OP states it has power drum on the front. With front drums, the rear should be the 11". So somebody's swapped something....

To the OP....what do you know about the rear end?

Dana equipped cars with power disc brakes came with the 10" rear drums, sounds like your Dana came out of a power disc brake car. Is your car a 4 speed or automatic?. Jay Leno has a '70 Hemi/4 speed R/T Challenger that's Super Track Pack coded, (4.10 Dana, Disc brakes, heavy duty cooling etc.), but along the way one of the owners must have gotten tired of the 4.10's and swapped in a 3.54 equipped Dana....that had the 11" drums, that would have come out of a Drum brake Hemi or 440 4 speed E-body.

Thanks to everyone for the info. Near as I can tell, it is an original Dana 4 speed car and the gear ratio is 3.54 : 1. So it sounds like it may have been a 4.10 car that had the gears swapped out or the rear brakes were swapped at some point. I will call the previous owner who should know the answer since there is no build sheet. Any ideas on how much more stopping power I would gain with 11" brakes vs the 10x2.5s? Other than a backing plate and shoes, what else would I need to swap out to upgrade?

It's a Dana 60 with 3.54 gears. I need to check with the previous owner and find out what got swapped. More to follow....

Thanks Mr. Expert for all the CORRECT information according to you. But you might want to note, we were talking ONLY about the original poster's '69 Coronet R/T brake options. Not every other possible combination built in the last 50 years including trucks and vans.

You might also note, I DID NOT say a Dana 60 NEVER EVER came with 10" brakes, only that in the context of a '69 Coronet R/T MUSCLE CAR, WHY would someone put them on an original Dana 60? You entirely misread my statement and drew conclusions that I did not intend.

I was going on the assumption that the Dana 60 was original to the car, and if so should have 11" drum brakes on the back as well. Then a bit later I started thinking maybe the rear was NOT the original to the car, hence my question asking about whether the Dana had been added.

I dislike seeing "wrong info" on this forum as much as anybody and am sorry to have contributed any "wrong info" whether real or perceived. This forum in general is FULL of wrong or misleading info (that's just my opinion) and my general rule is to ignore it and move on as it does no good to argue with all the experts that have ALL the answers. Perhaps its time to just ignore the forum entirely?

i appreciate everyone's opinion! I think flypaper may have been a little over zealous but the intent was to help me sort out the 10" brake question. Both of you provided valuable information. The follow up is that the previous owner did change them out many years ago. I would like to change hem back and will be looking for the parts at Carlisle! Thanks again
