so i finally got my project car. i've had my eye on it for three years, my uncle picked it up a few years ago and already has too many projects. it came with a 318 2bbl according to the VIN. its a lynch road car and im having trouble decoding the fender tag. it currently has a 8.75 rear end and big block crossmember, and my other uncle donated a running 72 400 with a 727(could be a 451 later on....?)ive got 2 driveshafts, the original and the one from wherever the 400/727 came from.the rear half of the car is fairly rusty, but the front isnt bad at all.and the price was right. the good thing is that everything is there- all the little parts and odds and ends seem to have stayed with the car.someone was smart and tore the carpet out of the floor and trunk. im thinking i wont put all the trim back on, im not a huge fan of trim. since i have a running motor, ill concentrate on the bodywork. im trying to do my homework as best as possible.im going to start by gutting the interior and removing the engine(its just set in there), then getting it sandblasted with fine sand, dont want to kill the car or ruin anything. then hang the doors properly, as the rear quarter alignment goes off the doors...correct? any help/tips/etc would be great

Congrades on the car!

Welcome to the dead b-body bring-em back to life club, suggesions? look at all of Donnys and Prop washs posts and dont tell your wife about the money youll be spending unless of course she is also a woman of vision:icon_axe:
good luck with your 69 great car!

so ive started on the build- or the teardown so to speak. ive pulled some of the trim, tore the vinyl off the roof, removed the seats and seatbelts, removed the rear taillights + housings. bumpers are coming off next. the back half of the car needs alot of love ($$), but the front fenders and aprons etc is all pretty good. as you can see, im either going to be spending alot of money or alot of time on the roof.I also found the build sheet under the rear seat but its got rusty spring marks all thru it. yes thats snow in the background, im in northern British Columbia,Canada. its finally warm enough i can go outside and work on the car ive been waiting all winter anxiously.

does anyone know what the tool is that i need to get the trim off the windshield? can i get it at a parts store or is it a special item?

Mike

Tool is called a windshield trim removal tool. Napa and auto zone have them around here. Not knowing if you even have those stores up there, you might want to check with your local auto parts store or google it on the internet. They're readily available online.

If not a very thin screwdriver but strong, wrapped once in electrical tape incase u slip a little and the #1 when removing it is patience it will bend, ding and scratch very easy, craftsman pick sets will come in handy as well! Just some other options, but what will said is the best way! Welcome aboard! Sweet familiar ride!!

good luck buddy. i found when i would do that much work i would make a game plan and work it. it seemed to work for me.

thanks alot for the help guys! im sure I'll have more questions to come as this build progresses.so what do you guys think of goodmark metal? i had a professional bodyman friend come out and evaluate it a bit her recommends full quarters etc etcoh how i wish... I'd like to go with the more expensive AMD stuff, but money is an object so i have to cheap out where i can. ill probably have to cough up the $ for a roof i am thinking. anyhow, i got started grinding and gutting. ive almost got the interior gutted , i tore the ceiling vinyl out, and it was loaded with mouse crap so i quit(till i get some masks) and then decided to cut the rear quarter out and do some rust removal. i also cut out the trunk extension. theres lots of rust, i am gonna go thru zipcut discs like crazy.it is still pretty wet here so i was laying on my side in the mud grinding the bottom of the quarter by the rocker out. here are some pics i took today. no the snow still hasnt melted here...

You're doing the right thing, but, in the wrong order. I would recommend no more metal removal. Strip it down to a bare shell, get it media blasted and in some good primer, then, assess your car -- it will be a different vehicle. All the money and time you are spending now is frankly, and sadly (been there, done that) a waste of time, and money. Media Blasting is the best money you can spend on your car at this stage of the game. I'm not just saying that b/c this is what I do, but, I see so many cars like yours, I do my magic on it, and it either is a huge relief for the customer, or let down -- it tells the truth to you about your car.

if i were anywhere near texas, I'd pay you a visit for sure. closest thing i can come up with near here is sandblasting. Theres a company doing plastic media blasting near vancouver BC(500 miles away). if i had my own sandblasting setup Id try a different media. should i just get it sandblasted then? fine sand maybe? i called a guy he said he'd use fine sand but doesnt do PMB. I know your right Donny but im kind of limited here with resources so i thought id get going on the car anyhow. i wanted to get that quarter off to see how bad it was under it, then I kind of got OCD and started cutting rust out. i an going to continue to gut the car out now that i have masks -i stopped because of mousecrap(could be hanta virus in mouse dung)now im going to resume gutting the interior.thanks for the heads up Donny, ill try to stay focused on gutting it and getting is sandblasted

Personally I think taking off the 1/4s the way you have is a good idea that way when you get the car blasted you can get up into the rear structure area and saves having to blast the car twice. So far from my experiences the best way is to have the car dipped but a lot of people don't seem to want to go that route. Have fun with the project because it is very easy to get dismayed and overwhelmed. Keep the pics coming and good luck and welcome to the B- board.

yeah i definately wont be getting it dipped....if i had more $$ and if it were a hemi car maybe...i am probly going to cut off the other 1/4 also.it does open it right up.got in there with a mask tonight and cleaned out the interior , broken glass, dirt ,mouse crap, etc and removed the rear seat belts. steady as she goes....

Pics, Pics, Pics. We need to see more of this car inside and out.

Kudo's on manning up and working in such slop up there..Bad enough the grunt work of digging into all that rust..

But, the best part is you're having fun doing what you are doing, right!!!??? That alone is worth it! Good luck! Rust is everywhere, trust me. Keep the pics coming.

so got at the car today for a hour or so. didnt do a whole heck of alot. shop vac the dust out of the interior, got the trim off the windshield and the passenger rear window out and the trim along the top of the doorline in the roof. and yes Donny im having a ton of fun doing this. and im finding rust everywhere too..haha. there are some more pics to drool over, Superfreak. theres a pic of the trunk pan from inside the quarter i cut out, also the roof now that ive cleaned the old insulation out. and a pic of the inside of the rear 1/4 after i pulled the small window/crank assembly out

cut as much of the window sealant out as possible(will take some time if weather is cold).some guys use a piano wire to work it under the glass then follow around the edge, but there is a tool that a local parts store can have/get.make sure you have a friend to help you, it will make it easier when you need to lift it out.
